Being an ingenue seems to have gone out of favor, and veterans seem to be preferred.

Which I think is better. To award long working actresses is much better than jumping to award someone the first time even thought person’s career best work may be yet to come.

I agree, but there’s a difference between Laura Dern and Julianne Moore winning long-overdue Oscars and giving them to McDormand over and over or Zellweger for what was virtually her first good role since the last Oscar. I don’t think McDormand or Zellweger were undeserving by any means, they both delivered amazing performances, but Sally Hawkins, Carey Mulligan, and Scarlett Johansson have all consistently put out amazing work for a decade or two now, enough to be considered veterans in my book, and would have been just as deserving.

FYC: Bad Sisters (Anne-Marie Duff) Cunk on Earth (Diane Morgan), Fleishman Is in Trouble (Lizzy Caplan/Claire Danes), Industry (Marisa Abela/Myha'la Herrold), Physical (Rose Byrne), Poker Face (Ellen Barkin/Joseph Gordon-Levitt/Chloë Sevigny), The White Lotus (Sabrina Impacciatore)

Oh yes totally. I think Mulligan, Johansson and Hawkins all fit the bill of long working actresses getting their due. (I actually think Hawkins is massively under recognised ). I was more referring to the sudden urge in the 1990s to give it to Gwyneth Paltrow and Helen Hunt (although she did have a TV Career) and this decade to Jennifer Lawrence (and Brie Larson to an extent). I consider Emma Stone out of this because I think by 2016, she low key warranted some recognition for a decade’s work.

I don’t think an Oscar should be given considering the person’s career. In theory, it should be for a specific role regardless of whether the actress has a 60-year career or if she is a newcomer in her first film.

Fair but art is usually subjective. So in a particular year where many performances which are equally deserving are competing, preference should be given to the actress constantly working and having gone unrewarded for a long time. However if the newcomer gives an undeniable performance, then they should be rewarded (but there has rarely been any case of this. The only one I can think of is Charlize Theron).
