It’s interesting how the Academy has rejected interesting roles in favour of the same kind of roles.
Laura Dern is the only winner in the last 11 years whose role is not wife or grandma or mother or maid. The Academy rejected a marketing executive (Kate Winslet,Steve Jobs) and a unique role (Amy Adams,The Master).

Really interesting point, and even in Dern’s case, she was in a film that was very much tied up in those themes.

And the category fraud this decade was rampant.

In fact 2015 saw the greatest ever average screentime for any supporting category in Oscar’s history with Alicia Vikander and Rooney Mara being clear leads while Kate Winslet and Jennifer Jason Leigh had a huge presence.

My only analysis is that overall most of these winners are either subpar or just ok. A couple of really good ones though.

Imho almost always the least interesting category. The winners are mostly deserving but few of them I would call spectacular.

    For Your Consideration:
The Banshees of Inisherin in ALL categories, including:
    - Best Picture
    - Best Director
    - Best Actor (Colin Farrell)
    - Best Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson)
    - Best Supporting Actor (Barry Keoghan)
    - Best Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon)
    - Best Supporting Actress (Sheila Flitton)
    - Best Original Screenplay

I don’t understand the hype for Laurie Metcalf in Lady Bird. I am glad Allison Janney won that year tbh.

Statistics for this category are very hard to analyze, the trends seem to be ever changing and there’s not much coherence between winning performances. Last decade’s winners were a mix bag, half of them were great and half of them were not great but most of them were undeserving.

    2010
Rightful Winner: Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom) – Legendary performance.
Actual Winner: Melissa Leo (The Fighter) – A decent win but not at all remarkable or deserving.
    2011
Rightful Winner: Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) – Iconic.
Actual Winner: Octavia Spencer (The Help) – This movie aged so badly, it’s a shame this is Octavia Spencer’s win. Cute performance.
    2012
Rightful Winner: Amy Adams (The Master) – The best performance in a weak lineup. Adams would’ve been a little more deserving than Hathaway but not an amazing winner also.
Actual Winner: Anne Hathaway (Les Misérables) – This was not an undeniable performance at all and she swept everything. Not a bad winner tho.
    2013
Rightful Winner: Lupita Nyong’o (12 Yeras a Slave)
Actual Winner: Lupita Nyong’o (12 Yeras a Slave) – Great performance, deserved to win.
    2014
    Rightful Winner: Patricia Arquette (Boyhood)
Actual Winner: Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) – The winner of the decade in my opinion. Legendary performance in a movie that should’ve won Best Picture, what more could you want from a supporting winner?
    2015
Rightful Winner: Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl)
Actual Winner: Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) – Clearly category fraud but in terms of performance there is no denying she was the best, lackluster lineup but Vikander was amazing.
    2016
Rightful Winner: Naomie Harris (Moonlight) – She would’ve been not only last decade’s best winner but also one of the best ever. This is ACTING! Everything about it was fucking amazing, not one false note and her vocal delivery throughout the film is impeccable. I don’t understand how anyone could see this performance and vote for somebody else.
Actual Winner: Viola Davis (Fences) – Nobody could’ve won other than Davis, the strongest narrative and a very solid performance. Category fraud but what really bothers me is that the win felt underwhelming. We all want to see Viola Davis win again for an iconic performance that better represents her onscreen presence, rather than a win cause she is great.
    2017
Rightful Winner: Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird) or Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread)
Actual Winner: Allison Janney (I, Tonya) – I really like this win, it’s everything that makes Janney great but this was one of the strongest lineups of the last 20 years and everyone would’ve made a great winner; So even though I think Metcalf and Manville deserved it a tad bit more, I’m not mad at Janney winning at all.
    2018
Rightful Winner: Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) or Marina de Tavira (Roma)
Actual Winner: Regina King – Again, great lineup where everyone – except Amy Adams – would’ve been a great winner. I don’t think Regina King did enough to warrant a win but she was great. Weisz would’ve been my winner with De Tavira runnerup and King taking third place, but a solid performance still and I’m happy Regina King is a winner.
    2019
Rightful Winner: Florence Pugh (Little Women) – VERY solid work in a VERY weak lineup.
Actual Winner: Laura Dern (Marriage Story) – One of the worst winners ever, should’ve never won for this since it does not represent Dern’s talent in the least.

    Winners ranking: Arquette > Vikander > Nyong’o > Janney > King > Davis > Hathaway > Leo > Spencer > Dern.
    Rightful Winners ranking: Harris > Arquette > Weisz > Weaver > McCarthy > Metcalf > Vikander > Pugh > Nyong’o > Adams.

I think it’s also noteworthy that Melissa Leo is the only one whose film won another acting award. This means the correlation to other acting races was 0 in Actor, 0 in Actress and 1 in Supporting Actor.
