How was she lead? She was in 38.6% of the film, as opposed to Denzel’s 67.47%, which isnt even 2/3. Seems supporting to me…

She should have won Lead Actress. Kidman and Witherspoon did it with less screen time.

Lead. Had she been nominated here, she would’ve won a hard-fought battle against Emma Stone, Meryl would only have 20 nominations, and Naomie Harris would be an Oscar winner.

Lead. Such blatant category fraud, I can’t believe it still goes on.

Meryl had gotten everywhere in a film that made money, that was a difficult role / a new type of performance from her. Her film had another nomination to back her up and Grant was likely 6th.

Add her iconic Globes speech into the mix there’s no way was missing.

David would’ve bumped Negga if lead.

I haven’t seen the movie so I can’t speak to that, but based purely on narrative I do remember thinking even at the time that she could’ve beat Emma Stone had she been in Lead.

There was a lot of momentum around her finally winning won, and I think it would’ve seemed really tough because La La Land seemed like such a juggernaut but we obviously all saw how much it ran out of steam by the end. Plus, as cynical as this sounds, she may have been helped by the political moment the same way Moonlight was (and just to be clear I say that as someone who even at the time thought La La Land was vastly overrated, Moonlight deserved to win, and is one of the best films of the decade). The maybe Emma Stone could’ve won for The Favourite, which is an infinitely better performance than La La Land, but it also means she probably would’ve gone lead so Olivia Colma wouldn’t have won there, but probably would’ve won in supporting.

And just to say everyones probably right that she would’ve taken Negga’s spot which is a real shame, because that was an inspired pick and my personal winner in the category (tied with Portman, but in a tie I go with the person who doesn’t already have one haha)
