Lead or Supporting: Danny Aiello in Do the Right Thing

This is an interesting one to me. Aiello and Spike Lee are clearly the most prominent and central performances in the film, so they logically make sense as leads, but at the same time, it’s an ensemble film overall, so the supporting nomination is justified. I’d lean towards lead, but I understand supporting.

Either way, Aiello should’ve won. And the film should’ve taken Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay.

Surprised at the results so far. I’ve heard more people say lead in the past. Figured it would be at least leaning that way here.

Mookie (Lee) is the leading role. Sal (Aiello) is supporting. As great as Aiello’s performance is, I’m not sure if it’s better than Denzel Washington’s work in Glory. I do wish that Ossie Davis was nominated, though. I think that he was the highlight of the cast and deserved to win over Washington.

No one, outside of Lee, I would consider lead for this film. Aiello I would say was definitely the most prominent Supporting actor.
