She’s only on screen for 35 minutes in total. Do you think she’s really lead? borderline? or completely supporting.

She’s lead like Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs. She is the film’s virtue and  has an entire character arc with screen presence that is portrayed throughout the film. The film even ends with her.

Burstyn should have been campaigned in supporting though. Maybe she would have had an easier time to win the Oscar over Julia Roberts.

Oh most definitely, she should’ve campaigned in supporting actress and easily won. The supporting actress category of that year was a mess and iconic, four other nominees each won a precursor, Judi Dench won SAG, Julie Walters took BAFTA, Kate Hudson had the Globes, and Queen Frances McDormand collected Critics Choice Award, but in the end it was Marcia Gay Harden who was not nominated in any of the precursors came in and ran with the surprise win! If Burstyn went supporting, she could have swept like Roberts did in leading actress.

She’s definetely lead, this just happens to be a movie with 4 leads (or maybe 3 if you consider Jennifer Connely a supporting actress in Jared’s arc) so of course she doesn’t have a big amount of screentime.

She definetely LEADS every scene she’s in.

It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

One of the rare roles which she could be whichever she chooses without real complaint

Even though is a very “ensemble” film I feel Ellen & Jared are the leads of the story with Jennifer & Marlon being the more “supporting” parts.

BTW Ellen was robbed of an Oscar and Jennifer Connelly should have been at least nominated in supporting too.

Shouldve been nominated in all four categories.

Lead. I think probably Jennifer, Jared and Marlon were leads as well. It’s kind of an ensemble but a rare case where it doesn’t feel that right sending almost everyone in Supporting.

One of the most memorable performances I’ve ever seen.

It’s supporting imo. Same situation as characters in Magnolia.
