She’s absolutely a lead performance but there have been worse cases of fraud over the years in the male categories. I think there is a case that can be made, other than with Mahershala in Green Book, for example.

Lead in the same way Felicity Jones< was lead for The Theory of Everything. She is not the main character but there are large stretches of time when she is alone without Borat. I actually think this instance of fraud is worse than Kaluuya.

For those of you who have watched this film, is Bakalova as lead as Rooney Mara in Carol? Honestly, I don’t think that it fits the lead category even if her character has a second biggest contribution to the film. There has been a very long time of woman to be called a lead in a film when she’s not the real centre of the plot. Most of them served the lead male’s narrative and although spent so much time in the story, they’re only the side character.

Well she is completely serving the lead male’s narrative, because of that I do think the supporting placement is acceptable. I think it’s more like a Faye Dunaway in Chinatown scenario but ironically I’m fine with Dunaway’s lead placement because somehow she feels more than simply supporting Nicholson. Bakalova is not on that level in my humble opinion.

Her narrative is a complete reaction to everything Borat does but I agree it’s debatable.

I think the relatively short length of the film also adds to the category fraud impression.
