Tatum O’Neal was only 10 years old when she won the oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Her wonderful performance in Paper Moon. Its obvious to me she is a co-lead with her father and should have been nominated in lead actress. I never understand why awards bodies always nominate childrens performances in only the supporting categories when a lot of the time they deserve to be in the lead categories. Tatum is very much a lead, but what do you all think is she a lead or supporting?

She was definitely lead – and brilliant in the film. Would have been a deserving nominee in the leading category, but that was a very strong lineup, and the weakest nominee (Jackson) won.

This is in contention for being the biggest category fraud of all time.

It certainly wasn’t a bad performance by any stretch of the imagination but I do wish she could’ve been in Lead and that way I would’ve given an Oscar to her co-star Madeline Kahn.

Yep, boost O’Neal to lead and award Kahn. Her Trixie Delight is, well, a delight.

And while we’re on the subject of 1973, can we bemoan how none of the Cries and Whispers actresses got in despite the film getting Picture and directing nominations? Were they properly campaigned? Did they all cannibalise each other in the lead category?

O’Neal was definitely lead. I still hoped Madeline Kahn would have won on Oscar night. She deserved to. I don’t think Tatum O’Neal would have been nominated in the Lead Actress category because every one who was nominated deserved her spot. I consider that year the best ever for Lead Actress. Glenda Jackson deserved her win but so did the other nominees – Ellen Burstyn, Barbra Streisand, Joanne Woodward and my choice Marsha Mason.
