Had to make a new forum poll because I couldn’t edit the other one so please vote and leave your opinions on this one. For me Viola was Ma Rainey and is a co lead with Chadiwick.

I did vote Lead but frankly she should’ve been in Lead for FENCES and a supporting nod would’ve made more sense here.

Nevertheless, I still think Lead (but barely)

    2010s’ least-lead nominees, per screentimecentral:

The Help 32% (though not far below Stone’s 36%)

    Bombshell 34%

American Hustle 36% (Bale has 49%)

Ma Rainey is around 28% (Boseman has 47%). Viola would be the first lead nominee in less than a third of her film since…Viola Davis.

    (Her Supporting win was 39%…)

Viola is the title character, so I would vote lead. You could probably make the case for either, but I would go with lead. So far, she’s my pick for Best Actress (I’ve seen Kirby and Adams) but still need to see McDormand, Mulligan and Day. I can’t wait to check out their performances.

    Chadwick Boseman: 44:07 (46.89%)
    Colman Domingo: 29:14 (31.07%)
    Viola Davis: 26:41 (28.36%)
    Glynn Turman: 26:30 (28.17%)
    Michael Potts: 21:54 (23.28%)

Based on that site, Davis would tie for most lead noms with less than a third of time on screen, with:

Kerr, Signoret, Bancroft, Streep, Spacek; Finch, Brando, Rush.

Co-lead with Chadwick. MRBB is not Levee’s or Ma Rainey’s story, it’s a ensemble picture and they’re the co-leads. But I wouldn’t mind if she was in supporting.

She’s bordeline. You can make a case for her to be either lead or supporting and both would be plausible. She always felt slightly supporting but lead is more than justifiable.

It should be highlighted that the person who tweeted this goes on to say that both Boseman and Davis are leads, and that a supporting actor having more screentime than her doesn’t change that.

Exactly. And it’s also worth noting that Davis is actually front and center in every single second of her 27 minutes of screen time. Boseman, on the other hand, isn’t, specifically when they’re trying to record “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
