She’s supporting imo. Just because she’s the title character, doesn’t mean she’s a lead. It’s actually quite surprising that Boseman got a lot of screentime in that film, almost DOUBLE more than Viola’s. If there was a co-lead, it’s Colman Domingo. The film is GREAT and Viola deserves a nomination whatever category it is, but I think she needed more presence in a film that was supposed to be hers. And I feel like that’s what might be keeping her from dominating the wins in the lead category.

I thought she was lead. I thought Chadwick should have been supporting.

I was totally fine with her lead placement… I think continual Oscar category fraud (usually pushing leads into supporting) has rewired a lot of minds into thinking that a performer has to be in basically every scene to be considered leading.

Without Viola, Chadwick has no storyline. Because what were they gathering in the recording studio for? MA RAINEY! She’s LEAD!

Based on my memory, she wasn’t in the film long enough for lead, Boseman was a clear lead but viola was the title character. I would vote supporting.

For whatever it is worth, when the play was performed on Broadway, Theresa Merritt played Ma Rainey and won as Tony as Best Featured Actress in a Play, not Best Lead Actress.

I note that I haven’t compared the text of the play to the film’s screenplay so it’s possible that Ma’s role is a bit larger in the movie.
