Something I found interesting last year was the argument over the category placement of the three main characters in The Favourite. I’ve heard many different opinions about who should’ve been placed where, so I thought it would be fun to setup a poll and see what everyone thinks (I’m fully aware the idea of all three being supporting is ridiculous, but maybe someone genuinely believes that, so why not include the option).
I personally believe that all three are leading performances. They all feel equally important to the story, all have a decent amount of moments both with each other, and with other characters, and they all get way more focus than any of the other characters in the film.

I felt like they were all leads, like Colman said at the BAFTAs, it’s a film lead by all three of them and they should all be rewarded. But at the end of the day it’s got her name on it but they could scratch in some other names. Haha!

Does it matter now? One of them crushed my and Glenn Close night and took over a month to get over.

the biggest shocker in Oscar history. I did not see that coming! A huge upset. I screamed and cried tears of joy for Olivia, but my heart broke for Glenn. What an upset.

All three are leads, but the one that I would be okayish with going Supporting is Weisz, because she has the least amount if screentime.

It was a real roller coaster of emotions. While I’m very sad for Close (dear God, she was dressed up like an Oscar) I’m still extremely happy with the result. Colman gave the greatest performance of the year (in all categories) and probably one of my favorite performances of all time. It says something about how amazing she was that she could overcome Close’s huge overdue narrative.

All three leads. That’s not even up for a debate.

As for that upset in February, if I’m not mistaken you have been warned about that possibility.

Who said all three are supporting? I didn’t think anyone was actually gonna use that option. I’m genuinely extremely curious to hear the reasoning behind that vote.

Weisz and Stone were supporting. Colman lead. A case could be made for Stone for lead though if I remember correctly. I forgot who wrote that up in the threads though

Realistically they could only have one of them in lead and two in Supporting else they would not have all gotten nominated.

That’s obviously why the studio did what they did. But we’re not talking about the studio. We’re talking about who actually belonged in which category.

    All three are supporting.

Why? Because neither of them was developed enough to be a real lead. It was an ensemble, one supporting the other.

They can all be considered lead, but Stone is the most lead. It’s more her story than the others, it’s more from her point of view, she has the most scenes overall, and the most scenes without either other actress. Colman is barely in the first half of the movie, while Weisz sort of disappears in the 2nd half. Stone is always at the center of things.

A film about Stone’s arc within Colman’s story
