In my opinion, it’s a 100% supporting performance (a great one, btw!), but I would like to see you guys opinions as well. Tom Wilkinson was the true lead of the film. Marisa Tomei seemed like a lead in the beginning of the movie, then she became 100% supporting as well.

It's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!

I think she was borderline so I was fine with her nomination. Unlike many on here I don’t just go by screentime.

Neither do I! I think screentime only can be take as a serious way to say if someone is leading or supporting if its over 70% or under 15% (ish).

In this case, it’s just because I always thought she was supporting the story of the film, never leading it.

I think she’s borderline supporting but I’m happy with her category placement.

I’m happy to hear that because it baffles me so much when people only go by screen. I can understand your reasoning for saying 100% supporting.

She’s borderline supporting but I’m fine with her leading placement. She had a few very explosive scenes with Wilkinson and Tomei. I was particularly wowed by her confrontation with the former, she projected so much anger, pain and raw vulnerability. She may not drive the plot but her anguish and despair leave an indelible mark that resonant with the viewer long after the film has finished. Wilkinson may be the main lead, but her Ruth is drowning in grief and that directly influences the dramatic conclusion.

I’m fine with her lead placement by I understand the supporting argument, and btw all 3: Spacek, Wilkinson and Tomei deserved to win.
