Fruitvale Station in Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress. Gravity in Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom in Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. If Harvey Weinstein’s apparent influence can get you to the Oscars, i presume the world’s most talked about individual (Nelson Mandela) who just died can get your acclaimed biographical performance on him recognised with a nomination.

Saving Mr. Banks seems like it’s currently ranked as an outside shot for the Original Screenplay category. I could certainly imagine that happening if there is passion in a number of categories.

The Crash Reel could surprise in the best documentary category. If voters feel too prickly about The Act of Killing — and it is an excruciatingly tough watch — than The Crash Reel gives them a subject with weight, but also a hopeful ending to boot. It is sitting at 100% on RT, and has significant acclaim from tough graders like the dissolve to back it up.

It’s not your typical sports doc, that’s for sure. Contrary to what most would think, I think older academy members will be able to relate to the film because of the huge role that the parents play in Kevin Pierce’s journey, and the tragic moments that affect the entire family.

I don’t see how Adele is a dark horse.

She’s been predicted from the start of the season and it won’t be a big surprise if she makes it at all. She’s probably ranked around 6th or 7th at the moment with 4 people battling for 2 spots.

    1. Chris Cooper for A:OC.  Lone Supporting Actor Candidate can corner the #1 votes of the film’s supporters especially those associated & affiliated with A:OC.
    2. Gustavo Santaolalla for A:OC.  2x Best Original Score Winner (in consecutive years) will be recognized anew.

I wouldn’t consider Adele a dark horse either. On the other hand, maybe Lea Seydoux could be seen as a dark horse…but the supporting actress category is a bit too crowded.

I guess Bruhl and Abdi aren’t considered dark horses anymore after their nominations for the SAGs today. I would love to see Abdi get in.

I still see Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer (is she a dark horse?) having a chance.

I take that back. Seydoux isn’t even dark horse material. She has zero chance.
