This is a thread designed solely for people to predict which films are going to be flops at the Oscars 2021. Yeah, there’s a little bit of that everywhere, but I want to have a thread solely to preserve this so people can look back and laugh at all the wrong takes and find occasional Nostadami among us.

    For Your Consideration:

    Best Picture: Parasite

My bet is that Dune will flop in that it’ll be expected to win like 7 awards–maybe even going into the ceremony itself a la 1917–but then by the end of the night it’ll have a few technical wins but that’s all. So not a failure, but a flop in terms of expected industry success.

I could see Dune becoming a First Man-type film.

Stop praying that Dune gets doomed.

Dune. Some stories are best left for the TV format.

… After reading the book, I’m really not sure why there’s so much Hillbilly Elegy buzz. That book has no insight or contextual depth to its perspective other than shock value mockery masquerading as sympathetic understanding.

I like Amy Adams a lot, but can she get it for a really good movie? Glenn as well. Ron Howard is a mediocre director too, really not instilling confidence.

Is this Oscar night itself like The Irishman or the early hopefuls that are DOA like Cats?

I can see Tenet beating Dune for visual effects & cinematography, leaving Dune empty handed.

Hoping that Ammonite will be similar to Mary, Queen of Scots…

Even though I’m super exited for Dune (it’s my most anticipated film of 2020), I agree with a lot of people here that it’s going to underperform compared to people’s lofty expectations for it, especially since I’m expecting it to bomb at the box office. Picture, Director, and Screenplay are off the cards, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it only got about as many nominations as Blade Runner 2049. It’ll probably pick up at least one or two wins though: Visual Effects seems likely.

    Academy-Award winners:

Parasite: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay

Joker: Best Actor - Joaquin Phoenix

    Jojo Rabbit: Best Adapted Screenplay

How do you know the movie isn’t good? Have you seen it?! Also Ron Howard said in an interview that he and Vanessa decided not to focus too much on the political side but on the family and how the Appalachian culture influenced them. And if Netflix is planning a November release and a festival tour for it than they must have confidence in it.

I think Dune may get some below the line nominations and/or wins, but I don’t think it’s gonna be a major contender like some people believe it will be.

I’m going with Tenet. It just seems nonsensical. I wasn’t feelig the big reveal in trailer of the reverse car accident. Just seemed so meh. I bet critics love it because it will be a muddled mess that only they can understand, but I doubt Oscars bite like they did with Dunkirk.

I’m also not sure Dune was expected to be oscar player tho?

It seems like one that people are currently divided on, but I’ve seen several people predicting it in above the line categories such as Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, and Adapted Screenplay, so I think it’s fair to mention it.
