ReplyCopy URLJanuary 28, 2023 at 5:46 pm #1205272982I agree with an earlier poster; I think it’s much more likely that Fablemans goes home empty-handed than Banshees. I have no stats or science to back up my hunch, but I just feel Banshees is a film they will want to reward with something, whereas Fabelmans…maybe not so much? I can’t imagine a scenario where they BOTH go home empty-handed, unless we are predicting a total EEAAO sweep…lately the Academy seems to enjoy spreading most of the gold around. Just my two cents.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 28, 2023 at 6:20 pm #1205273009It seems like half of the BP nominees will go empty handed because EEAAO is frontrunner in many categories

- The Last of UsJanuary 29, 2023 at 9:55 am #1205273547I think Banshees can still do ‘The Favourite.’ The movie blanks in every category except ‘actor’. With Batman and Banshees in contention, Butler and Fraser splitting the votes due to both being transformative performances and Farrell being a known face in the industry – I can see him winning the prize in the end.
I have EEAAO winning Original Screenplay. The whole academy will be voting and despite how you feel about the film, its originality is something that makes its so singularly unique. And we have seen screenplays going to Get Out, Her, Promising Young Woman – films that are the second strongest of their category but due to it being unique and such a sleeper hit, Academy rewarding it here.
I have Spielberg winning Director right now. But yes, Fabelmans is something that is more likely to blank.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 29, 2023 at 10:07 am #1205273578I’m fearing this will be the case with Banshees. It’s sort of funny because it feels like on a good day it could win four – Picture, Actor, Supp. Actress and Original Screenplay.
Yep. I know many people weren’t fans of 3 Billboards but while Banshees has consensus and overall favorable reviews, Billboards had strong passion. That’s why Banshees is more vulnerable to blanking out.

I think Spielberg is pretty strong in director though, so Banshees feels more likely
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 30, 2023 at 2:27 pm #1205275124I think “The Fabelmans” will go empty-handed in major categories (Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actress and SUpporting Actor). I think EEAAO is the best candidate for trifecta – Picture, Director, Screenplay. Naturally, Supporting Actor and Editing. Actress is a toss-up but I can see a world TAR getting that one. And Banshees getting actor.

Best Supporting Actress: Angela BassettJanuary 30, 2023 at 4:03 pm #1205275233I agree with the above sentiment; AMPAS usually goes for what’s more original. You can’t deny Everything‘s originality and I think it’s gonna have the edge over Banshees‘. Both screenplays are absolutely genius and it’s a tough call and will be such after Banshees possibly wins the screenplay BAFTA. On that note, Banshees may get its consolation prize in an acting category. If Condon wins BAFTA, I’d be very worried for Bassett. And best actor isn’t set in stone yet. Both Condon and Farrell were excellent. As of Fabelmans, it’s indeed losing everything (unless it snatches score over Babylon), and nobody will shed a tear over it.
EEAAO is original, but its also stupid and the script doesn’t make sense. IMO it will be a travesty if Banshees doesn’t win Original Screenplay.

Considering how hot this movie came out of the gate during Festival season and the fact this pretty much is THE story about Steven Spielberg, to see it fade out so spectacularly to the point of being shut out blows me away. Not to mention this movie is one gigantic love letter to Hollywood, and if there is one thing the Academy loves rewarding, are films about itself.
I can still see them giving the Best Director Oscar to Steven Spielberg considering the personal nature of this film. While this is certainly not his magnum opus (he has made far better films and more ambitious films), this may be his most personal, meaningful, and sentimental film ever. They may also want to honor him one last time as he is getting up there in age.

Well, realistically speaking…
1. Williams is not winning Actress over Yeoh or Blanchett
2. Hirsch is not winning Supporting Actor over Ke Huy QUan
3. Spielberg/Kusher are not winning script over McDonagh/Daniels/FieldWhich only leaves Director and Picture of the main ones. Spielberg can win, that is for sure, but it would be underwhelming. We’ll wait to see how PGA and DGA award the movies, but currently I am more inclined to see Daniels and EEAAO winning here.

Banshee’s sp and perfs are stellar, but they’re vulnerable to losses from staunch competition. It can blank.
They could both go home empty.Of course I’ll forget I said any of this if they do well @BAFTA/SAG.
