    Hi Everyone:

The most recent odds here on Gold Derby currently forecast Mad Max: Fury Road to win 6 Oscars: Film Editing, Production Design, Makeup, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing and Visual Effects. While I don’t see it going home empty handed, I currently have it winning for Film Editing and Makeup, I wonder if  its sweep of the tech/craft categories will be as broad as expected. I think its a lock for Makeup but here’s how I could see it losing in its other favored categories:

-Film Editing: If The Big Short ends up winning Best Picture I could see it winning here as well as the Best Picture winner usually wins at least 3 Oscars. (The Greatest Show On Earth in 1952 was the last BP winner to win only 2 trophies). The Big Short will probably take Adapted Screenplay and I think Alejandro Inarritu has Best Director in the bag so unless Christian Bale pulls off an upset in Supporting Actor this is the only other category the Academy can give The Big Short that third trophy. Plus with The Revenant picking up some momentum recently it could take this category as well if it wins Best Picture.

-Best Production Design: I think either The Danish Girl or Bridge Of Spies is going to prevail here as they are the more traditional period pieces that usually win in this category.

-Best Sound Mixing/Sound Editing/Visual Effects: I think Mad Max is in a tight race with Star Wars in all 3 categories here. Going back to Gone With The Wind every film that has ever held the all-time box office record has won at least 3 Oscars so there’s a possibility of that trend continuing .(I apologize for sounding like a broken record in frequently quoting this stat. I only mention it again as I feel its relevant to the conversation.) Also, as with Film Editing, The Revenant could take one or two of these categories with a Best Picture win.

As I mentioned above I don’t see Mad Max going home with nothing.  However, could we here on Gold Derby be overestimating the film? I am certainly interested in hearing everyone’s opinion on this topic regardless of whether you agree or disagree with me.

As always I hope everyone is doing well.

P.S.: Even though I didn’t care for Mad Max I assure you that bias did not come into play in creating this topic.

Very possible! So is The Revenant only winning Actor and Cinematography. American Hustle – won SAG, zero Oscars. Lincoln – Actor and Production Design. Gangs of New York – zero Oscars. There Will Be Blood – Actor and Cinematography.

I am actually predicting it to win three – sound mixing, cinematography and production design (even though this period piece argument is really heavy, and I also see one of these two movies wining it instead).

Mad Max wins BAFTA for Editing and Makeup. Always a pretty good sign. Just saying…

And now Mad Max wins Costume Design. This category is very, very hard to predict.

You might be farming some free-range truth there. I wouldn’t discount this off-hand, especially if The Revenant sweeps.

Very high. I never thought it was #2. Revenant has taken that spot, so plenty of categories where it was thought to be front runner are up for grabs. Only semi confident in production design.

Frankly, I don’t think it’s entirely inconceivable we’re in for a “Gangs of New York”/”True Grit”-style shutout here. Two or three prizes still strikes me as the likeliest scenario, but the film has clearly lost some buzz during the guilds season.

It has won three Baftas so far. It won something at every guild but PGA and DGA.

Somebody reassure me that Mad Max is not going to lose to The Revenant in the sound categories because after BAFTA I’m super worried.

Oscar voters like The Revenant more than BAFTA voters do by looking at the number of nominations including the surprising nominations of costume design, production design and Tom Hardy. But The Revenant already can win 5 awards in BAFTA. I can see The Revenant getting at least 6 awards at the Oscar (the 5 categories it won in BAFTA) – Picture, Director, Actor, Cinematography, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing. Look out for some more surprisng wins such as Makeup&hairstyling and Editing. Costume Design may go to Sandy Powell. This could leave Mad Max with only 1-2 awards

What I think is going to happen is a split between the two categories. I have to do some thinking on what gets what. I also think Star Wars is in the mix to win either category.

Question: how delusional does somebody have to be to predict The Revenant only winning Best Actor and Best Cinematography?
