Just as we’re getting a film reboot of West Side Story later this year, another well-regarded movie musical is getting one too despite people questioning whether or not it even feels necessary. Greg Berlanti is set to direct a new film adaptation of Alan Menken & Howard Ashman’s beloved 1982 cult musical, Little Shop of Horrors. Chris Evans is in talks to play Orin Scrivello, D.D.S. while Taron Egerton and Scarlett Johansson are circling the lead roles of Seymour and Audrey. Meanwhile, Billy Porter has apparently signed on to voice the vicious plant, Audrey II.

I swear to god, I thought you had to be joking until I opened the article and saw it was real. NO to actual hot people playing Seymour and Audrey, I am not here for it. And these are REALLY hot people. Even Evans is probably too good looking to play the Dentist (although that’s slightly more forgivable). The reason no one has been able to compete with Ellen Greene’s Audrey is because Ellen Greene is FUCKING WEIRD and they keep casting typical leading ladies in the part. Rick Moranis is an adorable nerd that just can’t catch a break. Egerton and Johannson are two of the fittest, best looking people alive! A NYTimes review of the 2003 broadway revival said something that always stuck with me:
“the performers don’t bring much oomph or original eccentricity to their roles. With both Ms. Butler and Mr. Foster, you’re always aware of the clean-cut winners who are portraying these smudged, bruised losers.”
I think Egerton and Johannson could play the parts fine enough (I probably wouldn’t have said so about Johannson before Jojo showed me that she actually can approach campy-weird) but the show will lose what it’s really about. I saw a Pasadena Playhouse revival recently starring MJ Rodriguez as Audrey and George Salazar as Seymour. While both actors are of course attractive in their own ways, they’re not super models, and you believe that they’ve beaten down by life and don’t see a way out. The show is supposed to be kind of grungy and dirty and anti fairytal (that’s exactly what it was parodying). I love this musical and would love a new movie (even though I think the original is a classic, especially with the darker ending), but cast some losers in the leads!
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

ReplyCopy URLFebruary 24, 2020 at 12:56 pm #1203359056I don’t like this. First off I’m sick of Seymour being played by so many studs, and Scarlett seems vocally wrong for Audrey. They’d probably have to lower the key.
Also, the original film is great. Unlike something like West Side Story, there’s very little that dates the movie, so why do we have to try it all over again?

This will be a mess anyway. The previous version is one of my favorite musicals so I’ll still watch though.February 25, 2020 at 5:37 am #1203359653Don’t get the point of any of these casting choices. Doesn’t look like they thought about this for more than 5 minutes.

At least Scarlett and Chris are. if unattractive nobodies and semi-nobodies were cast it would flop worse than Birds of Prey (which flopped with attractive cast that was deemed more famous than they actually proved to be).

There are plenty of famous people who aren’t two of the most attractive and clean cut human beings in existence (and honestly I’m not sure how famous Taron Egerton really is). Cast Anna Kendrick (who I find very attractive actually but is definitely quirkier than Johannson) and Skyler Astin (who is also attractive but not as hunky as Egerton) and sell it as a Pitch Perfect reunion. Cast Joseph Gorden Levitt and Lady Gaga (actualy a very good suggestion from above), go POC with it, whatever. These are just what comes to mind and a quick google search of “actors who can sing” but there are plenty of options. And I understand there is always the struggle between making it good and making it successful when it comes to movies, and I’m probably being naive but I’m always going to cross my fingers and hope for the side of making it good and the success will hopefully follow.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 25, 2020 at 11:33 am #1203360115I didn’t mention this, but as long as he can sing it, I think Chris Evans as Orin is a good choice. I’m not entirely sure about Billy Porter, I could see him being great, but I could imagine him not being threatening enough. His higher tenor voice contrasts with other actors who have voiced Audrey II. The role onstage is written as a bass-baritone, although Levi Stubbs’ magnificent work in the original film shows than it can be taken up a bit and the music still works. In fact, the music for Audrey II probably never sounded better than when Stubbs voiced him. His wide baritone range caused the character to go from thrilling highs to creepy lows.

ReplyCopy URLFebruary 25, 2020 at 12:20 pm #1203360232LOVE Taron and Chris for those roles but Audrey screams Lady Gaga to me. Saying that, I guess Scarlett is a good choice too. Billy Porter as Audrey 2 is genius to me.

I get your point and you certainly aren’t wrong. I do think that Evans singling will be interesting. Also, when I said regonzition name hotties I meant him and Scarlett. taron is still rather unknown to general audience at least by the name. Kingsman movies aren’t exactly Marvel-tier blockbusters.
