Hmm, I saw a few complaints where the first half of the film was composed almost entirely of flashbacks and they were sort of choppily edited, which a few people found jarring? For every comment like that there are more saying that Gerwig imbues the film with her own unique touches, I think there might be enough praise to keep her in the 5th Director slot for now.

The only thing I have reservations about is what they mean by Gerwig putting her own “spin” on this classic story.
The cast and direction in other aspects I’m not worried about.

I’ll have to watch and see for myself. I just hope traditionalists don’t get their noses bent out of shape.

Florence Pugh for Supporting Actress seems like a good call. Reviews calling her a highlight, as well as spill-over buzz for her performance in Midsommar.

    For Your Consideration:

Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women is wonderful. The world may not “need” a 4th major studio version of the beloved novel, but it more than justifies its existence by having a fresh take on the material through its unusual structure, its humor and just being a lot more lively than the 1933 and 1994 versions were (I haven’t seen the 1949 version nor read the book). The most obvious change is that it constantly goes back and forth in time throughout the movie, between the sisters as teens and as young adults which serves to emphasize not only echoes between the two periods, but also how the characters have changed over time. This would make the film hard to follow (given that the characters look nearly unchanged between the two timelines), but the outstanding editing and especially the way that the two times are filmed completely different in a way that immediately jumps out and serves a purpose. The characters also feel a lot richer than the previous versions I’ve seen: everybody gets a chance to shine and is distinct, even small roles like Chris Cooper as Mr. Laurence. Finally, it also focuses on elements that other versions have put in the background, like the economics of being a women in the late 1800’s (that are still applicable in many ways now) and how it made being an independent woman nearly impossible.

As far as Oscars go, I think it’s a shoo-in to be nominated for Actress (Saorise Ronan), Supporting Actress (Florence Pugh who matches or exceeds her work in Lady Macbeth), Adapted Screenplay, Production Design, Costumes and Alexandre Desplat’s Score. I certainly hope it gets a Best Picture and Best Director nomination, but I have a horrible suspicion it goes the way of Carol where it gets a ton of nominations but is ultimately snubbed because it’s “just another version” of something that’s been done before.

Also, Greta Gerwig did a Q&A after the screening. You know how they they say “never meet your heroes”? Yeah, screw that: she’s awesome. She lights up a room like no one I’ve ever seen, is extremely smart and wears her emotions on her sleeve in a way that’s extremely endearing and genuine. I am somehow an even bigger stan for her than before.

This is a thread I’d be prudent to avoid, ala Over rated Performances, and Category Fraud.

    “Emma Watson tries.”

Emma is the least offensive person for me actually. Lol.

She certainly offended my ears in Beauty and the Beast.

Definitely don’t regret putting Florence on my predictions for Supporting, every review I’ve read has praised her and Saoirse. I’m predicting her and Saoirse for acting along with BP at least. I have Gerwig in director but that’s in the air whether she’ll get a second nod, but I want to have hope haha.

I don’t like her and saoirse ronan is not really a box office breaker. most of her films are flops included the latest mary queen of scots , on chesilbeach&theseagull , lady bird and the list goes on. perhabs she also makes the worst choices an actor could make by doing multiple movies with the same actors … just to let you know she is doing another film next year with timothee chalamet ”the french dispatch”.
