I really think this will get the same treatment as Phantom Thread. Unferperforming at the Globes, completely shut out from SAG and all of a sudden 6 nominations for the Oscars.

At this moment in 2017, Phantom Thread was doing well with critic awards while LW is barely making a dent so not really.

Yeah, Phantom Thread is more comparible to Uncut Gems or The Farewell this year than it is to Little Women.

    Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix

I’m hoping the overall lack of support for the film is because of the late screeners, and that it’ll gain major traction with all the press the cast and Gerwig are doing plus the wide release. It’s not as fortunate as Phantom Thread at this point in the race, but I hope it just pops in out of nowhere with Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actress, Supporting Actress, Score, Production Design and Costume Design.

However I already had doubts before all the snubs, so at this point I’m prepared for the film to get 0 nominations.

Out of curiosity, do you think LW would be faring the same if the Oscars had been as late as last year? Or do you think the early Oscars is messing with the films with late release dates?

Was Phantom Thread doing well in the race at this point? I just remember no Oscar pundits outright dismissing it for anything outside of actor and costumes

This most definitely doesn’t have the cool snobby factor + DDL final performance that Phantom Thread had.

This movie was a warm hug. Gerwig’s script is brilliant, her direction is solid. The entire ensemble is fantastic, even Emma Watson is the best she’s ever been. Saorsie Ronan transcendental, I shivered watching her watch a book being printed. Florence Pugh is a stand out. It sucks that this is being overlooked this awards season.

I think the film is coming out at exactly the right time and I think it will do well on Oscar nominations morning.

This film is wonderful. I think more than being “late,” Sony was just holding it much tighter than other late releases like Bombshell were evidenced the designer guild snubs (they simply don’t snub movies at this level of costume and production design because they “don’t care for the film”), but for my money this is the best American movie of the year. Yes, over Irishman, 1917, Marriage Story, Hollywood, all of it.

And yes, Saoirse is definitely still in this since this WILL be a high priority screener for voters after they’ve already seen everything else, especially given how restricted the access has been to it by comparison. Even Timmy surprised me by how great he was as I assumed he’d essentially just be window dressing.

Darlings, Thatcher enjoyed this movie. Unnecessary but classy and updated. Brave Ronan was really good but it was pretty similar to Lady Bird. Warm Dern was better here than her low-level performance in Miscarriage Story.

As a famous singer said, "ain't nobody gonna Thatcher, Thatcher, Thatcher!"

I agree. I’m not gonna read into those earlier snubs. I’m of the line of thinking that this is probably gonna be this year’s Phantom Thread.

Glad you enjoyed the movie but this assertion literally makes no sense. The screener came to the SAG committee before thanksgiving. It even came before Once Upon a Time…If they were restricting access to it, they did a pretty poor job of it.

This film is beautiful and Ronan is my personal winner for Actress this season.
