I love Shakespeare in Love but it deserved none of its wins that year (apart from its craft wins and maybe Original Screenplay).

Judi Dench should have won for Notes on a Scandal although to be fair even then I’d still have given it to Helen Mirren so I’d probably have given to her for Mrs. Brown.

Lynn Redgrave should have won for Gods and Monsters.

FYC OSCARS : VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", AMANDA SEYFRIED FOR "MANK", CHADWICK BOSEMAN FOR "MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM", PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY).

Loathe the movie (I go back and forth on it, but I am not a fan), but Judi Dench is great fun and deserving for making the movie better.

I do not like this Oscars year – Saving Private Ryan is a film I think has done more harm than good to the history of war film, Elizabeth is a great Cate Blanchett performance structured around woeful historiography and writing, Life Is Beautiful’s audacious ambitions are not executed that well, and Shakespeare in Love is formulaic pap. In a year that had Pleasantville and The Truman Show, what a weak lineup.

    How so?

    How so?

Focus on lengthy battle scenes that are impressively mounted and shaky-cam worked well enough here, but later became an aesthetic that made war movies more focused on expensively mounted setpieces of shock and awe. The sentimentality and American patriotism of the rest of the movie influenced the cinema style of war movies that would later create the post 9/11 war movie… which wasn’t a prime era.

The way people are arguing over Shakespeare in Love and Saving Private Ryan on here and I’m in the minority who thinks Elizabeth should have won Picture and Actress…

I mean like I said I love Shakespeare in Love but every performance nominated in Actress and S. Actress was far superior than Dench’s and Paltrow’s. I mean I personally preferred Blanchett and Redgrave but Watson and Bates were also great. So was Brenda Blethyn.

The only performance in that category surperior to Paltrow’s was Montenegro, but I’m a minority on this one.

I do legitemately think Dench was the best in her category tho.

I don’t see Paltrow’s win as one of the worst ever but I’m sorry how on earth was Blanchett inferior to her?!!?!?!

Out of interest have you seen Gods and Monsters.

If Judi Dench received such traction for her short run this film, so should have Imelda Staunton.

And yes Lynn Redgrave was the best in the category.

Chromatica and Fetch the Bolt Cutters AOTYs yeah

Question…..How do you all judge which performance is better? A performance as Queen Elizabeth in “Elizabeth”, for example, would require something completely different than what Paltrow had to do. So how do you decide which is better? Movies all have different scripts, different characters, different tones.

A lot of people to think that weightier/dramatic material = better acting…

Ok you got me, I haven’t seen Redgrave haha. Out of the four she’s my favourite, the way she commands the screen during her brief 8 minutes is truly remarkable.

I just find Elizabeth to be really, really boring so that may affect my view of performance. Blanchett is good, but I couldn’t care less.

Harvey backed 6 of the 7 nominated performances from Dench.
