Welcom back to another round of love or loath. This time we have Kim Basinger in LA Confidential. I though she was ok in the movie nothing special. I have no idea how she got a nomination for this performance let alone a win so I personally loath this win. What do you all think.

Loathe. Her nomination took away a spot from a more deserving actress in this category. Charlotte Rampling in The Wings of the Dove and Glenn Close in Air Force One should’ve been nominated instead. Back in the day, it was said that Kim’s win was the Academy’s way of honoring the acting ensemble in LA Confidential.

Love the performance. Hate the Oscar win. It was completely unnecessary to award her anything.

1997 was a phenomenal year for Supporting Actresses…and Basinger’s performance is what they thought was ‘the best’?! 😒

If anyone was snubbed for The Wings of the Dove for me it has to be Alison Elliott.

It’s been years since I’ve seen LA and tbh I can’t remember much about Kim’s performance, apart from she looked the part.

She did what she needed to do and did solid work but there was no reason to even nominate her for this performance let alone WIN for it.

I did vote Loathe because I certainly can’t say that I loved her in it.

Julianne Moore should’ve won with Joan Cusack as the runner up.

Other people who were snubbed: Debbi Morgan, EVE’S BAYOU; Sigourney Weaver, THE ICE STORM

Gloria Stuart should have won for Titanic.

Ahh, the 1998 Oscars where the Academy pick the wrong female acting winners.

Best Actress should have went to Judi Dench for Mrs. Brown.

Best Supporting Actress should have went to Julianne Moore for Boogie Nights.

I don’t loathe either Helen Hunt or Kim Basinger wins – both were really good. I just thought others were much better.

Of course, I also thought L.A. Confidential should have won best picture but didn’t stand a chance against Titanic.

I think Bridget Fonda would have made a good nominee for Jackie Brown.

I don’t remember LA Confidential well enough to have a comprehensive opinion here, but one question I have is how on earth did Basinger tie for the SAG award with Gloria Stuart? With a voting bloc that size? What are the odds?

I didn’t realize there was a tie? I believe the SAG voting bloc is around 100,000. They must have ‘within a certain margin (maybe 1,000 votes)’ because an exact tie with that many voters – well like you said, what are the odds? Interesting.
