Welcom back to another round of love or loath. This time we have Kim Basinger in LA Confidential. I though she was ok in the movie nothing special. I have no idea how she got a nomination for this performance let alone a win so I personally loath this win. What do you all think.

Charlotte Rampling in The Wings of the Dove and Glenn Close in Air Force One should’ve been nominated instead. Back in the day, it was said that Kim’s win was the Academy’s way of honoring the acting ensemble in LA Confidential.

If anyone was snubbed for The Wings of the Dove for me it has to be Alison Elliott.
It’s been years since I’ve seen LA and tbh I can’t remember much about Kim’s performance, apart from she looked the part.

I did vote Loathe because I certainly can’t say that I loved her in it.
Julianne Moore should’ve won with Joan Cusack as the runner up.
Other people who were snubbed: Debbi Morgan, EVE’S BAYOU; Sigourney Weaver, THE ICE STORM

February 28, 2021 at 2:25 pm #1204067778Ahh, the 1998 Oscars where the Academy pick the wrong female acting winners.
Best Actress should have went to Judi Dench for Mrs. Brown.
Best Supporting Actress should have went to Julianne Moore for Boogie Nights.
I don’t loathe either Helen Hunt or Kim Basinger wins – both were really good. I just thought others were much better.
Of course, I also thought L.A. Confidential should have won best picture but didn’t stand a chance against Titanic.

I didn’t realize there was a tie? I believe the SAG voting bloc is around 100,000. They must have ‘within a certain margin (maybe 1,000 votes)’ because an exact tie with that many voters – well like you said, what are the odds? Interesting.
