Since were fresh from the Oscar’s I thought I mine as well make this poll to see where the majority resides because I’ve heard a lot of people living and hating this performance and her wins.February 12, 2020 at 3:51 pm #1203344783
Personally speaking I love the movie and her performance is good but not great out of the nominees I would have given it to Scarlett Johansson and if I had my choice away from the nominations I’d choose Rebecca Ferguson for Doctor SleepFebruary 12, 2020 at 3:55 pm #1203344793
This unpopular but I thought her performance was more captivating than the two leads especially the courtroom scene which is easily my favorite. Really thought she stole the show in every scene she was in, always surprised at the amount of people who hated the performance. Still thought Scarjo should have won but happy for Laura!February 12, 2020 at 4:21 pm #1203344821
I mean, it’s laura dern, her delivery is pencil sharp and she makes her character clear with the subtlest movements, that easily puts her above robbie and johansson for me, but compare this with her turn in wild or little women, those characters give her much more depth to develop and her impressive skills are showcased much better, despite all three roles having limited screentime
bates and pugh had juicier roles and are great actresses in their own right, I prefer their performances (and especially loved pugh’s 1800s lady bird in a contralto), but I see dern as the most capable actress of the bunch so I’m happy for her win, the dreadful sweep is a conversation for another day thoughFebruary 12, 2020 at 4:51 pm #1203344858This post was found to be inappropriate by the moderators and has been removed.February 12, 2020 at 9:42 pm #1203345068

you’re happy she won because she’s a better actress than the others? Isn’t it supposed to be about the nominated performances? We all know Laura Dern is powerful actress, but when it comes to the nominated works this year, she was simply the worst of them all. She didn’t even deserve to be in the conversation. Shouldn’t have been nominated. Her win was annoying but that sweep is the most disgusting sweep ever
Andra Day should be winning Best ActressFebruary 12, 2020 at 9:45 pm #1203345072
Such a disgusting win. She won because her mighty parents are going to die without Oscars, so the Academy was like “let’s just give it to their daughter since they’re never going to win”.

She was a good blend of sympathetic and manipulative. Wouldn’t have been my first choice but it’s fineFebruary 13, 2020 at 12:27 am #1203345167
I thought she was good, but nothing special when I first watched the movie. I can see how she won, even though I think there were other actresses with just as impressive performances (well only Florence, imo)
there's way too many movies that i haven't seen and i'm stressedFebruary 13, 2020 at 1:39 am #1203345196
I loved her performance but it didn’t really strike me as award worthy. After watching marriage story, I thought Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansonn gave better performances and if somehow the latter got nominated for Best Supporting Actress (instead of Best Actress), Laura would have been shut out.February 13, 2020 at 5:54 am #1203345384
Scarlett in Jojo would’ve been my pick. Laura Dern has an Oscar so maybe now they feel they’ve rewarded her parents. Laura Dern also is on the board of governors for the awards do it’s not wonder she won.February 13, 2020 at 6:58 am #1203345425
1. I am in the minority that I hated Marriage Story. People say “Oh you didn’t like it?” I say “It’s not that I didn’t like it, it’s that I hated it.” So there’s that.
2. I adore Laura Dern. I think she’s a wonderful actress who was fantastic in Rambling Rose, so touching in Wild, and so fierce and fantastic in the little remembered HBO movie from the early 90s “Afterburn”
3. She wasn’t bad in Marriage Story, I just thought there wasn’t much there.
4. In my mind, she instead won for Little Women and that I can live with.
5. I still wish Cho Yeo-jeong would have been nominated.February 13, 2020 at 8:22 am #1203345474
Rebecca would’ve made my Top 10. Such an underrated performance and film!
As far as Dern is concerned, it’s an OK performance.
She portrays the character like every other character she’s ever played. Her win doesn’t upset me as much as some.
However, what I loathe is the politics behind her win. We all know she didn’t win because of the actual role.
She won because of her history with the Academy, her background as Hollywood ‘royalty’, and being an overdue “vet”. Maybe that’s why she didn’t receive a standing ovation?
I can name at least 10 other supporting actress contenders who were better. But much like Gwyneth Paltrow, it seems nepotism and privilege can get you far.
Doctor Sleep is an underrated films and it made my personal Best Picture lineup and Rebecca was like a feral wolf in that movie pure brillianceFebruary 13, 2020 at 10:25 am #1203345573
I have said multiple times on here, as have others, that I ADORE Laura Dern. The fact that she now has an Oscar thrills me to no end……..but why oh why did it have to be for THIS level of a performance?
She isn’t bad. It is just that there isn’t much to the role and she essentially plays a watered down version of Renata. Her first scene was solid as was her courtroom scene, but her supposed “Oscar scene” is actually the one I liked the least. I feel like her interpretation of that monologue under Baumbach’s direction felt way too forced and artificial. It also didn’t help that the dialogue was on the verge of being a tad overwrought so her delivery only brought out the weaker parts of the text.
Her win is just one of the perfect examples of how politics and favoritism carry the day….so I just close my eyes and pretend she won for INLAND EMPIRE.
I do wish some of the PARASITE ladies gained traction here, with my vote probably going to Cho Yeo-jeong but I would’ve also loved to have seen Park So-dam get a mention too. Heck, while I am at it, Lee Jung-eun made a stronger impression with the smallest role of the main ladies.

Love the actress but the performance was decent. I have her ranked last out of the Supporting Actress nominees. She was worthy of a nomination though.

Supporting Actor: Glynn Turman, "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom"
