I completly forgot I had this poll series as well so its been a while since I’ve done love or loathe it, but lets get right back into it. Octavia Spencer is good in this movie but my personal choice for the oscar was Chastain, so I loathe her oscar win

Absolutely love. Sure Viola was the MVP, but Octavia didn’t do too bad either.

I love every performance in this movie, and Spencer is no exception. The cast was beyond deserving of the SAG ensemble award, they were phenomenal.April 2, 2016 at 11:09 pm #661730
LOVE! One of the better Oscar Acting wins in recent years IMO.April 3, 2016 at 12:31 am #661738
I absolutely loved her, but I would’ve given the Oscar that year to Jessica Chastain.April 3, 2016 at 4:46 am #661751
Loathe. I just don’t understand how she won everything under the sun. All she did was act outspoken and crap in a pie. I just don’t get it. Even Bryce Dallas Howard was better than she was.April 3, 2016 at 5:28 am #661752
General indifference. It’s the role that won the Oscar.
I would love to see a stronger actress in the part. I have always thought Mo’Nique would have been brilliant.April 3, 2016 at 8:42 am #661765
How anyone can loathe her performance in the film is beyond my understanding. She hit all the right notes and made me root for her character all the way.April 3, 2016 at 10:16 am #661784

But many do. I’ve always felt she’s terrific. Never breaks character; has multiple sides….
They need to scarf down a third slice I think….April 3, 2016 at 11:56 am #661789
Minny was a firecracker in the novel, and Octavia Spencer captured that well enough. There was even more shenanigans in it that the film skipped over. Liked her performance. Didn’t love it or loathe it. Straight down the middle. It was the goodwill toward Octavia as a journeywoman character actress that sealed her Oscar. They’re not as inclined to do SOs for the supporting winners. The love in the room for her was quite palpable. Compare it to Alicia Vikander’s recent win, for example. It’s like night and day, really.April 3, 2016 at 3:56 pm #661816
Years ago I would’ve voted loathe with the quickness. Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard were the MVPs for me. Octavia’s performance here is not the kind of performance I like, but I get the appeal. It’s problematic, but that’s a whole other type of thread. I didn’t know Octavia put in work before her moment (and sadly has gone back to that grind despite the win), but I agree that it was more of the role than her credits that got her the win. The bright spot of the #OscarsSoWhite non-controversy that it confirm what I have felt in my bones for the longest. The sad truth is that this is the type of part that anyone could’ve played and still got the win, because that is the kind of work they like.
So, abstain from voting, but wanted my evolved feelings about this win for the record.April 3, 2016 at 4:17 pm #661826
I liked this win. Spencer captured Minny’s no nonsense, kind-hearted soul. She was also the comic relief of the Help.April 3, 2016 at 4:35 pm #661832
Love love love. Impossible to root against her.April 3, 2016 at 5:12 pm #661840
Eh, I like Spencer in “The Help.” She’s really nothing that special, though, especially compared to Davis.
