Time for another round of love or Loathe. This time we have Joaquin Phoenix’s titanic of a performance in Joker. I know that there are a lot of people who didn’t like Joker and thought one of the other nominees should have won. I also know that there are defenders and lovers of not only Joker the film but of Joaquin’s win. I personally find his performance brilliant and is a well earned win and one of the better Best Actor wins they have had the past few years. I want to know what you all think do you love or Loathe his win.

I think his performance, and the movie in general, only keeps looking better in retrospect. Phoenix definitely hit a hidden cultural current in his performance that connected with many disaffected people in a big way. It’s definitely up there with the most iconic performances of the last decade.

Love. I don’t think it was the best among the nominees, but it was still a great performance. He should’ve won for The Master though.

    LOATHE.

He was literally way better in The Master, Her, You Were Never Really Here, Gladiator, and Walk The Line.

Joker is Phoenix’s Scent of A Woman, terrific by any other actor’s standards, but far from his best work, and a heavy concatenation of his worst instincts.

I think you’re confusing DiCaprio in The Revenant.

I think some people here don’t understand the complexity of a role like the Joker, the guy literally live in the skin of this character for months, I would’ve been scare to be near Joaquin in that set, a well deserved Oscar 👏 not for nothing is the first and only best actor winning performance in a comic book movie, and I know some people will say it wasn’t a comic book movie, but it has many nods to the comic books and graphic novels.

Love. Not my favorite in the line-up (that would have been DiCaprio), not my favorite Phoenix role (that would be Her or The Master), but still a pretty damn impressive performance. How people can think he was good and still vote Loathe because he’s been even better elsewhere is beyond me (no front though of course, to each their own).

While I was more in the “like it, but don’t love it” train on Joker, I thought Joaquin Phoenix absolutely gave a killer (pun intended) performance as the title character. If I was an academy member that year, he definitely would’ve had my vote for Best Actor.

    Baity

    Added nothing to the culture

Bill Hader and Barry in everything (2 babka)
The Great - Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult and comedy writing and directing

Severance in drama series, writing, Adam Scott for best actor, Ben Stiller for drama directing, and the whole cast in supporting.

Like. Not on either extreme spectrum of “love” or “loathe.” Phoenix’s pinnacle performance is still “The Master,” and my choice from the nominees that year would have been Banderas or Driver.

I’ve unfortunately loathed more of Joaquin’s performances as of late than loved, and that includes both Joker and The Master. I just find the recent moody brooding man schtick (I think he struck that note well in Walk the Line and leaned in way too hard since) to be such a crutch for him and it’s always distracting and uninteresting to me. Her and Inherent Vice were exceptions to that pattern and two of the more interesting performances he’s given lately. But I’m glad he decided to be less insufferable than in his I’m Still Here days, I guess.

For me Phoenix excels in nuanced roles, but similarly to Christian Bale suffers when he has to chew the scenery thanks to ham-fisted direction. I’d have much preferred him to win for You Were Never Really Here

    FYC:

Swinton, Weerasethakul Memoria, (Best Actress, Director)
Efira, Rampling, Wilson Benedetta (Best Actress, Supporting Actress/Actor)
    Rapace Lamb (Best Actress)
Stewart, Hawkins, Spall Spencer (Best Actress, Supporting Actress/Actor)

Trash to the highest degree. At least it was better than Malek, I’ll give him that.
