Welcome back to another round of love or Loathe. This time we have Whoopi Goldberg and her fantastic performance in Ghost. I absolutely love her win and was fully deserving to win, even though she should have won a couple of years before for the Color Purple, but I still love her win. What do you all think do you love or Loathe her win?

Loved it. The movie simply wouldn’t have worked without her. She brought such energy and comedic talent that clearly went beyond what was in the script, and it’s a type of role the academy should make an effort to award more often.

Very mixed feelings about this one. I’m just glad she has an Oscar

Love. One of the great Oscar-winning comedic performances.

Love. I can’t loathe such a performance when we have Laura Dern. Lol

She’s the best thing about the movie, but all of Bening, Bracco and Ladd were superior that year in a very strong category.

    She deserved it hands down

It’s not often when the academy recognizes a great comedic performance

My runner up would be Bracco

That was a strong year for Supporting Actress. Winona Ryder (Mermaids) and especially Shirley MacLaine (Postcards from the Edge) were also deserving of nominations.

I don’t really like the movie. She’s funny in it and is the best part of it.

It sort of amazing now in retrospect that she lost for The Color Purple. It would have been history making.

I think the rushed The Trip to Bountiful into a 2 week qualifying run and Page took it.

I wonder if Page would have beat Marlee Matlin the next year had the film been held back.

I haven’t seen Trip to Bountiful.

Was it one of those performances worthy of win or career achievement award

I’ve not seen the movie, though I’m going to go ahead and predict that Lorraine Bracco probably deserved it more. Not at all upset that Whoopi has a win though, even if that is 100% motivated by The Color Purple.

Also, RIP to my fellow Houstonian Patrick Swayze, who totally deserved at least one Triple Crown of Acting nomination during his lifetime and was tragically robbed of that opportunity. Maybe Demi Moore can get one at some point?

It’s a bad movie but she’s easily its best part, and an inspired win looking back and ignoring it’s because she should’ve won the year they gave Geraldine Page a “sorry” Oscar of her own at the end of her life when she’d already deserved several of her own by then.

It’s a good performance. It’s not like Paul Newman where it was clearly a career award. Page always had her ticks and stuff that people either love or hate so if you liked other work of hers you’d probably like this.

It isn’t a win the academy has to regret. I guess there was so much controversy around The Color Purple that some black people (like the NAACP) didn’t want it to win anything and Whoopi’s chances got sunk with ship. It wasn’t an #oscarsowhite type of situation. I think the Academy thought they were doing the right thing (no pun intended) by not voting for it.

Having an eight or whatever it was loser to hand it too made it hard to protest.
