Welcome back for another round of love or loathe. This time we have Laura Dern and her Performance in Marriage Story. I personally found her win a bit embarrassing considering she did not even deserve a nomination let alone a win. My personal choice was Cho Yeo-Jeong for Parasite, she was absolutely brilliant and deserved to win, and I would have also nominated Rebecca Ferguson for Doctor Sleep because she was so a force of nature in that movie. Laura Dern should have been nowhere near the Oscar’s that year. Let me know what you think, do you love or loathe her win?

100% loathe. I like Laura and believe she’s a class act, but she had no business getting nominated for that performance. Her character was one-dimensional, and the script didn’t give her a lot to do. It felt like a ‘career achievement’ win. And I agree about Cho Yeo-Jeong.

Do we even need a poll?

The most obscene Oscar win of the century, and perhaps for decades before that too…I haven’t met anyone who can justify her performance/win…and I say this as a fan who thought she deserved to win for Inland Empire… erase it from history!

    FYC:

Zahra Amir Ebrahimi - Holy Spider (Best Actress)
Ana de Armas, Julianne Nicholson - Blonde (Best Actress, Supporting Actress)
Samantha Morton - She Said (Best Supporting Actress)
Kerry Condon - The Banshees of Inisherin (Best Supporting Actress)

It’s not my favorite performance of hers or anything or my pick from that year, but I didn’t have a problem with it. Plus it got Marriage Story at least one win, if it really couldn’t have been Adam, so I was also ok with it from that angle. But I’m probably a bigger fan of the film than most around here.

Solid performance, just not really Oscar-worthy. She’s a great actress, but the role was mostly just kind of peripheral to the main drama of the film. If not for her “Mary, Mother of Jesus” monologue she would have left barely any impression at all. More “Meh” than anything.

Florence Pugh was the most deserving nominee, but I guess the scenes where she was supposed to be 12 despite obviously being an adult woman killed a lot of voters’ suspension of disbelief to the point where they didn’t want to vote for her. I remember one of the secret ballots said as much.

If Cho Yeo-chong was nominated for her incredible performance I would’ve loathed this, but she wasn’t so I have no issue with this win. The other 4 nominees really didn’t do anything special. ScarJo and Florence were good, but I think Laura was better than both. No one can chew up a scene like her.

We loathe pretty much everything about nearly every winner of that award season.
Except Parasite sweeping the major categories.

I love that Laura Dern is an Oscar winning actress. So there’s that.

However, Cho Yeo-Jeong should have been nominated and won. Make it make sense.

Don’t mind the performance (because there is literally nothing mind-able about it, it’s such a black hole of nothingness), loathe the win. Even Kathy Bates did more in Richard Jewell.

I think Dern was miscast in Marriage Story. Parker Posey as Nora Fanshaw or Toni Collette would have been a MUCH better choice

    So. Yes. L O A T H E

I hated Marriage Story so very much. In my mind, Dern was nominated and won for Little Women. Not the biggest role but she was great in it. I think it’s a typo that they put Marriage Story.

This is the most deserving acting Oscar of the 4 that were awarded this year. She was actually the best in the lineup

I don’t love it or hate it. I don’t mind the performance, I think it’s good for what it is, but there’s literally nothing Oscar worthy about that performance. Like, at all. It’s a funny quirky performance – basically a Renata Klein rip-off, and that’s it. Clearly the worst Supporting Actress winner of the decade.

The most deserving was Joaquin followed by Brad, Marriage Story was awful
