Yeah, sure there are shitty movies that make a lot of money, but there’s also masterpieces that make a lot of money, The Lord of The Rings, The Godfather, Gladiator, Ben Hur, Gone with the wind, are just a few examples.

Um… I’m not saying that movies that make a lot are bad. I’m saying that a movie making a lot doesnt make it good. Two totally different things…

Luckily it was a poor category, so the win isn’t particularly bad in relation to the performances it was up against.

Cho Yeo-Jeong and Zhao Shuzhen should have been nominated that year and been win competitive.

Under that lineup she was an okay-ish winner due to her name itself, but in a fair world Zhao Shunzen would’ve won.

Can someone explain to me why they feel Shuzhen should have won? I dont want it to be a combative answer because I’m genuinely wondering; I’m just curious.

And I’ve seen the movie, so dont just say it was perfectly nuanced or something. Say which scenes (or allude to them so as not to spoil for those who havent seen it) were nuanced or whatever and what you thought she conveyed.

Absolutely – loved them both. There were plenty of worthy nominees snubbed that year.

    For Your Consideration:

Carrie Coon, ‘The Gilded Age’ (no I haven’t seen it, but we have no choice but to stan anyway)

i remember watching the announcement and pretty sure either Zhao or Cho yeo jeong name would’ve been mentioned. And then gets badly disappointed. That is too good to be true lol

I’m surpsied no one’s mentioning Lee jeung-eun from Parasite. She was absolutely chilling during the film’s twist in the middle.

Don’t loathe Dern ever. But that year she was not win worthy and was even I’d say better in Little Women.

A fine career win. Similar to Matthew McConaughey’s win.

    The Real Winner

Because of this thread i just Rewatched Hustlers last night.Jlo as Ramona is just a nuanced and electric performance the she really should have won and the academy wrong for snubbing her.

No. It’s great they didnt nominate her, because in no way was she supporting.

I don’t “loathe” it. First it was great to watch her stomp all over Jlo at every precursor so I respect this win. I think her acting was actually perfect, she just barely has any scene. But that was a deserved career award

This said, Cho Yeo-jeong was the rightful winner

Zhao Shuzhen brought a great deal of warmth to the screen. It isn’t a flashy role and doesn’t have minute long monologues. It’s a realistic portrayal of Asian Grandmas—everything—from the calls to scolding son for being away from the culture to the wedding to the crying when everyone departs. Whenever she was on screen, you could totally tell that it was not a caricature of something,it was a lived in portrayal that did justice to the script and to the character.
