It’s solid. It’s above competent. The mid 80s to early 2000s were full of these Casablanca-like, Oscar-bait-y flicks. This is one of the better ones. It could have been pared down and more focused. 90s Ralph Fiennes is indeed something else.

    L O V E IT!

The acting, score, cinematography, editing, chemistry between Fiennes and Thomas, poetry. Its my favorite romantic movie.

Katharine Clifton: [dancing] Why did you follow me yesterday?
    Almásy: I’m sorry, what?
Katharine Clifton: After the market, you followed me to the hotel.
Almásy: I was concerned. A woman in that part of Cairo, a European woman, I felt obliged to.
Katharine Clifton: [amused] You felt obliged to?
Almásy: As the wife of one of our party.
Katharine Clifton: So why follow me? Escort me, by all means, but following me is predatory, isn’t it?

    May I have this dance:

    Over that competition? Really? Ok.

She should’ve gone supporting. She was nowhere near being lead. Like someone said, Binoche was much more of a lead than she was. If they had switched categories, Kristin could’ve won like Binoche did.

There was a time where my vitriol for this film was fervent as Elaine Benes’.

While I would say it has cooled off, I am still going to say LOATHE.

Binoche deserved her Oscar (although I agree that she felt more like a lead than Thomas)…and I liked the ensemble and cinematography.

As a whole, the final product remains one of the few films I’ve ever fallen asleep during…and not just once, but twice.

The winner should’ve been FARGO with SECRETS & LIES as a close runner up.

I agree that KST and Binoche should have switched categories. I understand the reasoning being that Katharine was part of the central romance, but in reality, her role was supporting Fiennes and had limited screentime compared to Binoche.

Hana had her own romantic storyline with Kip, as well as being integral to the Almasy plot. KST would have been my supporting actress winner, with Binoche being a worthy nominee in the lead category. I would have voted for Blethyn in Secrets & Lies or Watson in Breaking the Waves for best actress. They both delivered masterful and complex roles in films that were undeniably led by their driving performances.

Glad Binoche has an Oscar, but I hate that it’s for this movie.

Against Watson and McDormand, Binoche would not have stand a chance. I do agree that Scott-Thomas may have had a stronger bet for winning in supporting. Her acting is so seductive, intelligent, warm, passionate and more in The English Patient. Never seen her like that ever since

I’m glad it gave Binoche her Oscar and it helped the careers of Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas, and to a lesser extent Colin Firth. However, that’s about it. It is a beautiful movie to look at though and if one had to make a middling epic, this how you do it. I just think 1996 was way too good of a year for this movie to steamroll the awards though.
