Saw this by chance at a matinee today. As far as trailblazers go, it serves its purposes, I guess, but that doesn’t preclude the film itself from genuine criticism. I hope that better comes along in the future for the gay romantic comedy genre. Too saccharine, too white, too heteronormative, too upper-middle class, too clever for its own good, too thinly drawn characterizations, too much of everything, really. But maybe some of these issues are with the YA novel as source material. At least both properties found their respective audiences, and that’s a good thing. Oh well. Here’s to better entries down the line.

How in the world is this film too white? Were you expecting this film to be another Moonlight? You can make a case to support your other criticisms of the film but attacking its racial representation is just plain wrong.

My opinion is just as valid as yours, so take your bullshit elsewhere.

So you’re just being your usual trolling self spewing incendiary and baseless vile? Got it.

He has more black friends than white ones. His love interest is black. The only out gay kid at school is black. The main teacher is black. Your too white criticism is what is bullshit.

Saying the earth is flat is an opinion. It’s not a valid one, just like your “too white” opinion.

I think the film went out it’s way to be diverse.

The film is certainly more diverse than both Moonlight and Call Me By Your Name. Ethan was created specifically for the movie as he does not exist in the book so the film certainly aimed to be even more diverse than the book. Criticism of the film for being too white is without merit and does not withstand any scrutiny.

The criticism stands up just fine. Nowhere did I say I was expecting the film to be “Moonlight.” Ethan’s family life was as hermetically sealed as you could get. The makeup of the high school was predominately white. Virtually no other race groups were represented. I never said that the film had no minority characters, but they were secondary characters who were mostly minor and token. I did like the young actress playing the biracial friend, and Natasha Rothwell was hilarious as the drama teacher.

Two out of three of Simon’s best friends were minorities and in a movie low on stakes the main “drama” was that Simon’s selfishness was getting in the way of their budding romance. They were not minor or token characters. There are a lot of complaints to be made about this movie, even though I enjoyed it overall despite its softness, but lack of minority representation does not seem to be a strong one.

Had no idea diversity in casting or character racial background was a requirement of what makes a good movie

There were plenty of “minority” characters in ‘Love, Simon’. Not exactly sure where and why that complaint is coming up for this particular movie.

There were about 5 central characters played by BLACK actors.

If anything the movie is an over representation of America. Fact is America is white and people of color segregated Neighborhoods, schools and churches. Sad but reality.

Watched it. Such a real and sweet film. I feel like a film like this has been missing from the world. All the performances were great. Pretty good. Rank: A

More like your opinion is stupid as usual.

I’m tired of political correctness. I want to see good movies, and that is all.
