I am however bored with these constant stories about self-discovery, self-acceptance and/or falling in love and pretty, young masculine white boys.
There was God’s Own Country, which is none of those things… yet the GoldDerby thread was about 7 posts long.

Considering the art house circuit has not embraced hiring gay actors to play gay roles (Call Me By Your Name, Moonlight) recently, it is a bit of a stretch to expect a major studio production to hire one. At least a gay man (Berlanti) hired Robinson who ended up delivering a terrific performance as Simon. Plus at least three and maybe four openly gay actors had prominent roles in the film (including two of Simon’s love interests) and another had his scenes edited from the final cut of the film.
Given the dearth of the gay characters in major studio films for the past few years, simply having a gay lead character in a romantic comedy is groundbreaking for them, unfortunately. Apart from Simon and the lesbian couple in Deadpool 2, there have not been many (any?) LGBTQ characters on screen from major studios lately. Once that problem has been corrected, then gay actors can start filling those roles.

Why? You want a gay actor to play a gay character, so he can act effeminately or something? I probably took your statement wrong, but not all of them do. Sexuality has nothing to do with behavior. I was fine with Robinson taking the role, not saying he was perfect, but he was fine. I agree on the “brave” part though.
You’re right in that someone’s behavior and mannerisms often has little to do with their desires, passions, sexual fulfillment and romantic fulfillment. But I’m certain the poster was not talking about hiring a gay actor to “act gay”. There simply aren’t many out of the closet dudes in Hollywood, even with this supposedly “open-minded” younger generation. So, finding a talented, good-looking, completely out of closet, sane young actor that will fit a particular role probably is difficult. But it’s difficult partly because of the Hollywood system. However, yes, Hollywood does have a problem with highlighting even slightly effeminate men outside of over-the-top comedies or seedy, sad stories hyper focused on sex, drugs, partying and depression.

But I still loved it. In the end it moved me (both coming out scenes and conversations with parents), made me smile a lot and ending on the fucking ferris wheel had just the right amount of fairytale in it.Plus Nick Robinson was surprisingly great in the lead role and perfectly showed all the emotions that come with coming out – I would love to see him nominated for a Golden Globe next year.

My bet is that at least 50% of male HW screen actors are closeted. It will happen someday and will be as big of a scandal as what is happening with the Me Too movement of today. Especially when so many of the excetutives that run HW are gay also. One brave young man will eventually change things. It is inevitable.
