    Grammy winner Viola Davis 😉

    Love the sound of that.

As do I, Monsoon! That will kill three birds with one stone with a win! Cicely, Viola, and Robin Miles, who all sound great! I started listening to the book tonight!!

If the book carries the momentum into next years Grammy eligibility, it could definitely be nominated, and possibly win! All three of their voices sound great on audio!!

Ma Rainey apparently has an original song, I’ve seen the film twice now and don’t recall this song at all

The “Ma Rainey” song “Baby Let Me Have It All,” which screen-credited Branford Marsalis as composer and playwright August Wilson (who died in 2005) and Charley Patton (the Delta blues musician who died in 1934) as lyricists, had been entered for Academy consideration

^ The song isn’t Oscar-eligible, and neither is the score, according to Variety.

I want Viola to do a clean sweep. Her role is so baity and transformative. It’s right up voters’ alley.

If Renee Zellweger could dominate with Judy, which is an inferior film compared to its central performance, then V should be able to do the same in a project that matches her brilliance.

I think people are really underestimating her chances.

Darling, ignoring the fact that Grillz is actually a co-lead at best, the performance ticks all the boxes from a performance you’d expect from her and it is in fact disappointing due to the poor screentime and it feels one-note all the time around. I wish she could have done something more with the character but she didn’t.

On the other hand, Judy was a movie that was 100% around Wrinkled Zellweger and she did something we hadn’t seen before from her… I’m not saying Grillz can’t win, she can, but for the narrative not the performance.

As a famous singer said, "ain't nobody gonna Thatcher, Thatcher, Thatcher!"

    Baity? Yes.

    Transformative? Hells no.

How is it transformative when her lip-sync is out of sync and when for a couple of minutes she slips out of character right into Annalise mode? And how exactly is it transformative when she didn’t even bother gaining weight for the role and slides through wearing a fat suit. If it was anyone else the flak for the fat suite alone would’ve ending any chances of winning.

And for such a limited actress i am surprised she is being given chance after chance. Angela Bassett would’ve KILLED this role and would’ve won her well deserved and overdue award. Viola is not IT and she should not win another Oscar cruising just on name recognition.

First off, shoutout to the negatives who dip in the thread to say something negative, and that’s it, and the ones who liked the post cuz that’s the thing to do!We love it!!

Anyway, I’d love a sweep as well. The main one I’m concerned one with, I must admit, are the HFPA. Their track record of honoring black actresses in lead at the Golden Globe Awards is even more horrific than the AMPAS. However if they first start the ball rolling and honor her, then victory is won!! COME THROUGH, HFPA!!

hey guys i’m new to the movie threads of goldderby but i’ve been checking out all the awards buzzed movies recently. Today I finally got down to watch Ma Rainey’s and WOW i was so impressed! I thought this was one of the best acting i’ve ever seen from an ensemble. Especially the guys in the band, every time they had dialogue i was fully immersed and soo impressed. The whole cast was phenomenal.

I haven’t really read this forum yet so i don’t know who people prefer but holy shit Chadwick blew me the fk away. I though his acting was INCREDIBLE. SOOO good, it’s up there as one of my favourite performances ever. I know maybe more ppl are probably rooting for Viola and i thought she was amazing too. Her performance was strong and she fully became that character but if anyone deserves to get awards recognition from this movie I honestly think Boseman stands out the most. This is probably an unpopular opinion but i kinda felt like he was more the lead than Davis the whole time i was watching.

Major congrats to Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’s on their 9 NAACP Image Award nominations today, as well as their Hollywood Critics Association nominations! I hope they take the newly instituted Outstanding Ensemble award from NAACP instead of Best Picture, so the cast members can rightfully get a trophy! Next up, the Golden Globe nominations tomorrow morning. See what the HFPA has in store!!’

But the gag is her performance is the best in the category 💀

Is Jingle Jangle, Antebellum, or The Banker really worthy of an acting win…?
