Definitely getting some Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby vibes which is exciting. Both Driver and Johansson’s performances look great, if the film’s critic response is strong I could very well see at least nominations for both. Best actress compared to other fields this year is not extremely competitive so, if Marriage Story is strong enough to garner a BP nom, Johansson could ride that wave of momentum and sneak in a nomination.

I am excited for this movie. It looks like appreciation for “Lady Bird” with “The Meyerowitz Stories” completely ignored maybe inspired Noah Baumbach to write something stronger. For now all I’ve seen from him makes me think of lesser Woody Allen projects, this one not so much, of course. Fingers crossed for both Scarlett and Adam.

And echo to the previous comments – clever concept of the trailer.

Hey, now that everyone is paying attention to Baumbach (thanks, Scarlett!): go watch Mistress America. Baumbach’s best by far.

Getting Kramer vs. Kramer vibes from this.

Also, welcome to the big league Adam Driver.

she’s overestimated because they called her a lock without seeing the movie? Isn’t that the case with Saoirse Ronan? I guess that’s not an issue with Ronan cos she’s everyone’s darling here

I never called Ronan a lock. I’m only going to use that word on performances I’ve seen.

I find it interesting Dern wasn’t even in either of the teasers. I know she’s a supporting player but considering the buzz from her performance/role in this I was just surprised she wasn’t even shown unless I missed it.

Regardless, I think both Driver and Johansson look great. I could see both of them becoming frontrunners if the reception is good. I think Johansson’s biggest hurdle will be getting the nomination.

Out of curiosity, what’s your opinion on Frances Ha?

The role looks basic. She might be win but it won’t be for that court room scene. It’ll be for the same reasons Sandra Bullock won.

The difference is that Bullock never had a role before The Blind Side that was even close to touching awards bodies and they finally had a way to reward a box office darling to stay relevant, while Johansson has been snubbed numerous times for roles that should have on paper easily gotten her a nomination. I mean it’s not like Johansson had her box office claim to fame based solely on her performances in romantic comedies up to this point like Bullock, she’s taken on weighty dramatic material many times over.

Can you imagine this being as good as KvK and ending up sweeping? Basically becoming the next to Silence of the Lambs to win the big 5: Picture, Actor, Actress, Directing, Writing? Sounds too impossible. The world of cinema has changed so much since then that it feels impossible for such film to win Picture and I doubt the direction will be that good. I think ScarJo will deliver in the court scene and she’ll secure a nod in the seemingly barren field of Best Actress, but I think with the appropriate director she could deliver a performance capable of coattail winning. My money’s still on my darling Renée tho.

i was thinking this the other day, especially because all 3 of Driver, Johansson , and Dern are basically considered top 3 contenders in their categories, at least one has to fall off, if not two. It has been forever though since one movie took the two leading prizes and maybe the Academy is nostalgic for that sort of thing.

She appears very briefly in the courtroom scene, seated near Scarlett’s character.

I actually think this was a smart move. If the courtroom scene truly is as meaty as it has been proclaimed to be, the teaser was an excellent sampling for the movie without giving away too much. That approach could allow Dern to be a surprise knockout once the film is released and people actually get a taste of the performance. Likewise, if they held off on a lot of the emotional parts of Driver and Johansson’s performances, they could exceed expectations and break into the race in the top tiers of their respective categories.

It will be interesting to see if this happens if the film actually does as well as some are expecting, although I’m not sure if there’s any particular science to this not happening since 1998 or if it’s just a coincidence.

I do think that the plot lends itself quite well to multiple acting wins/ nominations – if Driver and Johansson are as good as one another and have a share of the meaty scenes it might make sense to people that they both win, rather than just one of them. In some ways, if the fields are pretty even, I think it might be a case of both or neither winning.

Yes, we see her from behind in the courtroom scene but was hoping for a bit more. But you have a good point – I am hoping this ends up being the case. As much as I am rooting for Bening, I would love a Dern sweep if she has the material.

Out of curiosity, what’s your opinion on Frances Ha?

Such a fun and truly melancholic film. I prefer Mistress America, but Frances Ha is quite good, and a lot of that rests on the power of Gerwig’s performance (at this stage, I consider her a far better actress than director/writer). Truly, I do think she is one of the few great comedic American actresses right now. What timing she has!

Anyway, I was mild on Baumbach until Frances Ha. It captures so specifically the privilege and sadness of that young anxiety, and the anxiety of being young.
