The world is changing and entertainment is subjective. It’s still cinema but just a different form.

Martin Scorsese can dislike superhero films. He claimed that it was not for him, and that’s OK. But then he goes to say that it isn’t cinema and compares them to theme parks. That’s where he’s wrong- cinema is making movies for a specific audience. The MCU and Martin Scorsese have differing audiences. Also, comparing them to theme parks is downright insulting, considering that people put their heart and soul into these projects, and when they are great, they are FANTASTIC. People like James Mangold, James Gunn, and the Russo Brothers go above and beyond to make the best superhero stories possible.

As a lover of theme parks I actually don’t think that was as bad a insult as Scorese thanks it is. Theme parks are also made by imagineers, architects, and artists who put their heart and soul into. It is a form of mass entertainment for a the whole family. Which is what most Marvel films are.

Comparing Marvel films to a theme park is a good comparison. I just don’t think it is negative in the way Scorese intends. My 3 best days this year have been at theme parks. They can bring immense happiness to people.

Yeah, that’s true. I should have worded it more correctly. But the point is that no one’s work should be lessened, theme parks, superhero movies, or otherwise.

    Movie-lover overall.

First woman who won Oscar for directing wasn’t Marvel’s. First POC actor and actress who won BA Oscar didn’t win it for Marvel movies. So no, Marvel is not groundbreakingly special in this.

This response makes zero sense. I am talking about opportunity. Not awards. Marvel gave the world its first Billion dollar grossing film to feature a majority Black cast. First female to direct a Billion dollar picture. Highest grossing female led action film. Soon, we will have a majority Asian cast crossing $1 billion at the box office. Soon there will also be a high budget Marvel show that features a Middle Eastern female lead.

This has opened the door for more diversity on the small and big screen.

And Marvel is not the one who first championed or started these opportunities. Hollywood began to do it already without Marvel, cause trends began to change in Hollywood itself – Marvel simply followed the trends to capitalize on them.

Being the first means nothing unless others can walk in the same doors. Whether Marvel “followed the trend” or not, success stories have definitely came out if it.

Following the lead is always easier than to be the first to do something. And success  stories were coming out before Marvel. And only because of those stories Marvel began to do similar things with its own movies. Not to mention for purely commercial and marketing reasons.

People who are hating on Scorsese need to calm the hell down. He never said anyone who enjoys Marvel movies is bad for enjoying them. And he did say they’re well-made from a technical standpoint. All he pretty much said is that it’s not what true cinema should be in his eyes, and that it’s just not his cup of tea. If his comments anger you, fine, go ahead and disagree with him. But stop calling him jealous, out of touch, or snobby. He’s the greatest director of all time, so I think he knows a thing or two about what great cinema should be.

Let’s be real. Scorsese is just so jealous his films aren’t box office successes anymore.

    I serve the tea (politely)

Superhero movies can be much better cinematic experiences than quote on quote baity oscar films that only please a few hundreds of people.

Not to mention that there have been actors who gave raved performances in these types of films, earning accolades while acquiring a few more zeroes to their paychecks.

    No, it’s not.

Anyway, this offered us some of the best Twitter discourse of the year, and it was glorious watching those frauds who work for Disney and their subsidiaries fall all over themselves to express their hurt when Daddy Marty tells them they made products and not art.

“Theme parks” – what a beautiful insult.

Now Francis Ford Coppola (!) is waging verbal war on Marvel. ‘Despicable’, he calls their movies.

This has nothing to do with my thoughts on his comments but I really thought Francis Ford Coppola had been dead for years until I read this headline

I don’t get why directors can’t say they just don’t like the films and move on with the comments. We all have film series and movies we don’t like. Just say “I don’t think those Marvel films are very good, the style doesn’t move me”. No one would care.

But the problem is when you start saying things aren’t cinema or are despicable. Then it becomes snobby sounding and talking down to other creators. That is what gets people upset.

Also I will repeat, every film that is released in a theater is a piece of Cinema, from Casablanca to Suicide Squad, from Slender Man to The Wizard of Oz. There is bad cinema and there is good cinema, but it is all cinema.
