And the Coens and Spike Lee, as well as Eastwood, Soderbergh, Jarmusch, and Baumbach….

it’s weird to me when people gloat about the directors adam driver has worked with & do things like include spielberg when he was essentially an extra in lincoln. none of the movies he’s done with those directors where he plays a lead role have been all that great either.
anyway, i think i might have lost all interest in this with driver attached. the script was so-so & he’s not an actor that elevates scripts. it’s why i was still interested when bale was the rumored replacement for isaac. wish either of those two had panned out. or that isaac would have been replaced by an actor of color that brought something to the table instead of an actor with the same kind of performance in everything he does.
is cate blanchett still involved? noticed she wasn’t in the announced cast.

Reportedly, Blanchett continues to have a very small role which is essentially a cameo.
I don’t think that people are “gloating” about the directors Driver has worked with or are boasting about the size of his roles or the contributions he has made to these films. My view is that the decision of so many prominent directors to cast him in their films says something about the respect they have for him as an actor, and about his willingness to stretch himself as an actor.

I truly hate to be the grump here, but I actually take issue with actors like Adam Driver working with everyone… pic.twitter.com/JTHaKWXaJ4

Yea. He’s not really a chameleon. And it’s weird that he’s been treated that way. As you said, he has a very specific vibe that of course you play against when the time comes. But many of the recent roles he’s taken aren’t even playing against, they’re just wrong for him.

Agreed. This discussion a couple of critics were having on Twitter also nailed what I feel.
ReplyCopy URLMay 14, 2022 at 9:05 pm #1204952319I’m a fan of Adam, but I agree with Robert Daniels’s tweet that some of the roles Adam has taken on are wrong for him. He was miscast as Maurizio Gucci in House of Gucci, and I’m certain Ridley cast him in it because he enjoyed working with him on The Last Duel. I thought his performance in it was bland and forgettable.
He’s also massively miscast in the upcoming Ferrari movie with Michael Mann. The film will focus on one year in his life, and on that year, Enzo Ferrari was 57. Adam is 38. He seems to be accepting roles from directors he idolizes and not thinking whether he’s right for the role. I think Adam’s name being attached helped Ferrai and Megalopolis get the greenlight.

(I’m aware he worked with Lena Dunham and multiple other female writers and directors on Girls).

About “he is very specific” Twitter Rants. I don’t sure I agree with those Twitter Rants. I loved him in THE LAST DUEL. He is so tall and big. I think he is at his greatest when he used/uses his huge body like in THE LAST DUEL, Girls and some specific scenes in Star Wars

Reportedly, Coppola asked actors to set aside 6 months to be available for filming, and Zendaya had to drop out due to the filming conflict with Dune 2. It appears the role she would have played will now be played by Nathalie Emmanuel.

He’s not a method actor. And, yeah, I would like it if he worked with a female director in film, but he DID work with Lena Dunham for six years, under her direction, which people love to conveniently forget. It was mentioned in that very post above in small print like it doesn’t count. It DOES count. He was directed by a woman for six years.

this is disingenuous. the only time he has worked with a woman was at the very beginning of his career, a stage where he had to take what he could get. as soon as he had any sort of flexibility he’s worked with a bunch of white male directors and spike lee. he’s even cycling back to directors he’s previously worked with (baumbach) before working with another woman or moc. that being said, i personally don’t really care about this since he’s a serviceable at best actor and i would prefer for women and directors of color to work with better actors.

i’ve read that the megalopolis schedule would conflict with dune, so she withdrew. it seems like a number of actors dropped out because of scheduling conflicts and that’s why coppola had to start seeing other actors, rather than working with his first choices.

Probably a result of the filming schedule. It’s a six month shoot to start, but this is Coppola and in his filmmaking style it’ll easily be months…years…of re-shoots as he extensively edits. He said he plans for this movie to take 3 years to make. So I’d guess they chose not to, or just through conflicts couldn’t, have a limited schedule for that long. Which is understandable. Makes sense why folks like Voight signed on. What’s he got to do?
Anyway, I read the script for this back when an earlier version got around a while ago. Things may have changed since but it had a lot of very early-2000s time capsule referential writing and very questionable dialogue. But it was fascinating. We’ll see how it goes, I’m intrigued but not confident.
