I’m enjoying some of the history lessons here so i thought I’d ask my own question.
When Mo’Nique won, she said something like “thank you Academy for choosing the performance and not the politics.” I understood that it was because she wasn’t really out there campaigning? Anyway, so I’m curious who was seen as her competition that would’ve taken the award if the Academy “chose politics instead of the performance.” Lol.
Thanks in advance for the history lesson.

None of the nominees touched her. There were great performances that were snubbed like Marion Cotillard in Nine, Isabelle Fuhrman in Orphan (Would have made a great winner), and Mozhan Marno in The Stoning of Soraya M.

As for her competition, there was none. It was basically understood to be Monique and the four other spots as people were shocked she could do drama and the character she was playing was a repugnant piece of work.

That wasn’t the reason why she said the pointed line about awarding her performance over the politics. It was specifically referring to all those who said that she couldn’t or shouldn’t win b/c she didn’t “play ball” by going out of her way to self-promote for the win. At the time, she was the host of a talk show on BET and had young twins to raise. She performed her contractual obligations for “Precious,” true, but didn’t do more than that for free. And she still won and swept everythinggg like a boss! History lesson complete.

On top of all that, Precious overperformed in nominations (and also in wins) making her even so more likely to win the trophy.

That’s what she meant by “not playing the game.” She had no competition. Mo’Nique is one of the best Oscar wins ever!

March 25, 2021 at 1:10 pm #1204157932Mo’Nique absolutely OWNED that Oscar. By far, the best Supporting Actress winner of the century.

March 25, 2021 at 1:57 pm #1204157993I hate precious but her performance gotta be one of the greatest of all time, sucks that she got blacklisted bc she probably has some more great performances in her to deliver
She fought against Lee Daniels, Oprah, Netflix, etc…. She killed her own career. Kind like Russell Crowe but Russell Crowe was more Successful than her.
