I created a previous forum talking about the weirdest Best Director lineups, but then I realized it would make more sense to talk about individual nominees instead.

I noted Babe’s Chris Noonan and Dead Man Walking’s Tim Robbins from 1995, The Full Monty’s Peter Cattaneo from 1997, and Amour’s Michael Haneke from 2012 and Beasts of the Southern Wild’s Benh Zeitlin from 2012. Another one for me includes La cage aux folle’s Edouard Molinaro from 1979.

There’s also Paul Greengrass for United 93, Lenny Abrahamson for Room and Pawel Pawlikowski for Cold War. In my opinion, their respective slots should have been filled with Bill Condon for Dreamgirls, Ridley Scott for The Martian, and Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born.

Teshigahara’s nomination is still completely confusing and easily one of the most inspired nominations ever.

He literally got nominated by DGA, how is that nomination shocking?

David Lynch for Mulholland Drive. Single nomination and nothing else. During nominations announcement while his name was announced, you can hear the press chuckles.

Fernando Meirelles for City of God. Wasn’t it a big surprise then? Received 4 Oscar nominations (Directing, Cinematography, Editing & Screenplay) but shut out for Foreign Language award.

It had been snubbed for Foreign Film when it was eligible, and Harvey Weinstein parlayed that injustice into 4 nominations for it the next year. Shame it missed Best Picture though.

Lynch was a sole nominee twice even, I wonder what the reason was behind that. Getting nominated for Blue Velvet after Dune was a feat by itself, wasn’t it?

The greatest thing about the Director branch is that they throw curve balls often. Usually these curve balls are smaller, less seen and often foreign. Don’t get me wrong they nominate a lot of schlock that the rest of the academy also notates, but bc of those curves they are my favorite branch!

“City of God” missing the foreign language film category was dumb, but let’s face it the special rules for voting in that category was likely part of the problem.

BENH ZEITLIN! One of my favorite Oscar nominees of all time! The world was gagged when this “Behn” was nominated over the other “Ben” lol, and I of course lived!

Darlings, not that it was surprising but Guillermo del Toro won for an abolutely lazy and disgusting work in the Disgust of Water.

As a famous singer said, "ain't nobody gonna Thatcher, Thatcher, Thatcher!"
