Danielle Deadwyler received consistently excellent reviews for Till— this was not a performance that was underrated. But of course, in comparison to what it deserved, the performance has been grossly under-recognized and under-rewarded.

This thread always goes by this name but I think it’s usually just used to highlight the worst snubs of the year (or at least that’s how it was on the TV side of the forums) hence my mention of Deadwyler (who is unequivocally the worst snub of the year imo regardless of the fact she received SAG and BAFTA nominations and universal critical acclaim for her performance).

The idea of this post is a mixed between those 2.

Fair enough. I was reading this thread in the hope of discovering movies or performances I may have missed because I mistakenly thought they weren’t worth my time.
Unlike Deadwyler’s extraordinary acting turn, which seems to have received near universal raves, I tend to think of Till as a genuinely underrated film because so many have dismissed it as simply a glorified Lifetime movie. It is so much more; it’s a heartbreaking work of art, beautifully acted by all involved, which cinematically reveals the significance and complexity of a family tragedy and local crime that, through the courage and sheer force of will of one mother, momentarily created awareness and sparked outrage that galvanized the American civil-rights movement, and yet, ultimately, so little changed. It’s the only film I cried at this year— it left me both ashamed and inspired, a seemingly inconsistent combination of emotions.
For me, Deadwyler’s failure to secure an Oscar nomination is frustrating not only because a great actress is being denied an honor she richly deserves, but also because it means so many people won’t be motivated by her nomination to seek out and watch the film. This is a story that needs to be known.

An example of a performance that is truly underrated from the same film is John Douglas Thompson, who held his own in his scene with Deadwyler and fleshed out a character far beyond the screenplay.
