The Witch
4.5/5 Stars
It wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be but it’s still one hell of a family drama anchored by a an outstanding ensemble and a star making performance by Anya Taylor-Joy
MVP: Anya Taylor-Joy
How to be Single
1/5 Stars
My cousin forced me to watch this with her and of course I did ot enjoy a single moment, Rebel Wilson is funny enough and Leslie Mann brings some emotion but it was just so bad I couldn’t help but be restless and the 1h50m runtime felt like an eternity because I didn’t like it, I wish I could get my money back for this one
MVP: Leslie Mann

Not since Kick Ass has there been such a fresh take on what is steadily becoming a stale, drawn out genre of film. The screenplay is fantastic, chock full of quick paced humour (dark humour) which never falls flat. Reynolds is so charismatic that the smugness of Deadpool never feels a tiresome joke, which it very well could have done if not handled correctly by the actor. It has an indie(ish) feel which breathes life into a genre I am becoming bored of seeing (there were about half a dozen comic book film trailers shown before this). It is not your usual ‘super hero’ film – which it says itself – and that is what makes it a brilliant watch. Most Likely Next Films To See: Eddie The Eagle, Zootopia, Hail Caesar, 13 Hours, Triple 9, Jane Got A Gun.

How to Be Single – E
A completely unfunny female centric comedy that makes me question the taste of all actors involved. Wilson coasts, Johnson is really wooden, Mann is also wooden and Brie in a role that if cut out would make no change to the feature. Overall it should be a complete miss as it adds nothing to new to everything.
Hail, Caesar! – B-
The Coen brothers have always hit it out of the park and while their latest Hail, Caesar! doesn’t quite hit the heights set by previous features by them I felt good about in after the fact. The cast really shine even in small roles with Fiennes, Ehrenreich and Johansson standing out above all. Overall this is a fun film that while I might not watch again so soon I will never complain about a new Coen Brothers film.

The Witch – A-
A horror film full of symbolism and great detail really makes for a truly captivating feature of human horror as early back as the colonial times. Some amazing performances and Eggers strong direction crafts this film into the long lasting brilliant film it is.
10 Cloverfield Lane – B+
While the third act of this film goes completely insane in directions I was sort of expecting the first two acts and so solid that even with an insane last act I still came out loving this film. Winstead and Goodman are great in this and unlike the supposed predecessor to this feature I was never bored during this film.
Sing Street – B-
John Carney returns back after a far fall with Sing Street. A good sense of growing up and some inventive music makes for a film that I came out liking but loving as I suspected to.
High-Rise – C
A film that falls apart due to a story that feels ungrounded where by the end we are just watching sequence after sequence of this wild and odd characters trying to survive in this large scale block of apartments. The cast is good I will say but the film they are in just lacks the something special I was waiting for with this film.
Kung Fu Panda 3 – C+
If you’ve seen one Kung Fu Panda film you’ve seen them all even though I’ve managed to see all three and still find some child like enjoyment from them. The voice cast continues to deliver the same and even with the story being wildly different it still is similar enough to the previous two that it’s hard to complain about the film except for this repetition.
Zootopia – B
A film that is both enjoyable on the outer service but also has something to talk about on another level with it’s expert execution of social commentary never being weighed down by it but growing more and more by this very clever commentary. Judy Hopps at the centre of this film is the complex and inspiring female character that we so rarely get in live action where she is defined by her talent equal to me and never by her being a female in a man’s world.
Nina Forever – C
A good film with some interesting thoughts of the relationship between love and death. I felt throughout the film was lacking and that the concept could have been better.
Mia Madre – C-
Other then John Turturro giving a fun turn this film is nothing more than an average feature.
Jim: The James Foley Story – D+
Just a series of sit down interviews as we see how the life of James Foley began and ended from his families perspective.
Michael Jackson’s Journey from Motown to Off the Wall – B+
A great time capsule of Jackson from a varied list of artists. Lee knows how to craft an interesting documentary blending the filmed performance footage with the sit down interviews in ways that I like rather then your typical documentary of this nature.
Anesthesia – D-
A rather forgettable directed feature from Tim Blake Nelson which includes a rather large cast of stars who just are in the film but overall do nothing of merit. The interlocking story structure is wasted and the cast is wasted which makes this film even more unimpressive.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – E
What is this movie. The film tries to apologise for the mistakes of Man of Steel while creating it’s own in this rather long 2.5 hours running time. No one hits it right and the entire film is a mess on the level of Amazing Spider-Man 2.
