I have just watched Reds (1981) and I’m lowkey insterested in watching more films with the same subject theme. Does anyone have recommendations?
I personally recommend the one I’ve watched (Reds), especially if you’re interested in The Russian Revolution. It was up to the 12 Academy Awards winning three: Director, Actress in a Supporting Role and Cinematography.
ReplyIt's about the chaotic editing in Moulin Rouge!
January 5, 2021 at 8:04 am #1203963527If anybody is interested in communism in film, isn’t drowning in Western propaganda, and willing to engage with pro-communism ideas, Sergei Eisenstein is of course your best bet as a start. Not only did he compose some of the most beautiful pieces of all time, but he was an experimenter and innovator of the highest calibre.

It’s not exclusively on communism, but it presents a Marxist point of view on some of the most important turning points of the past century, such as what happened in France (and elsewhere) in ’68. Marx’ ideas are still central to understand the world we currently live in, even if you decide to adopt a neoliberal position on things.

Also, possibly writing too!

Ah, Torn Curtain! An underrated Hitchcock I’d say…if anything, it’s worth watching for Lila Kedrova’s heartbreaking performance, it’s a shame she wasn’t at least Oscar nominated!

There is also an Australian comedy (1996) about Stalin and communism in Australia called Children of the Revolution (has lots of famous Aussie actors in it – Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis, Sam Neill).
Dr. Strangelove obvi. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
On the topic, the Wind of Change podcast about the end-of-Cold-War Scorpions song and the CIA’s role in Cold War cultural psyops is absofuckinglutely brilliant and is apparently being made into a TV show. In part, deals with CIA influence in Hollywood, and vice versa.
