The trailer has arrived.

The film will not include Mushu and the cast will not be singing the classic songs (instrumentals WILL be included).

This looks pretty good and the cinematography is gorgeous.

 

Official Synopsis:

”When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan the eldest daughter of honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing Father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into a n honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation and a proud father. “

Starring Liu Yifei as Hua Mulan, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Bori Khan, Yoson An as Cheng Honghui; with Gong Li as Xianniang, and Jet Li as the Emperor. The film is directed by Niki Caro.

I remember the actress from early 2000s chinese tv shows my parents used to play and she literally looks the same, like how

beyond excited to see gong li in a major american production again, she’s one of those people whose presence alone can make a film worthwhile for me

I’m also bummed about the lack of songs, but do we think (assuming the movies actually good) this could help its oscar chances? No songs and no animated sidekick definitely give this movie a more “serious” feel than some past live action disney adaptations.

Obviously its very early, but if it really excels and competition is weaker, these are the categories I could see it contending for:

• Best Cinematography
• Best Costume Design
• Best Production Design
• Best Visual Effects
• Best Makeup and Hairstyling
