I got the idea from the Glenn Close thread where we all have different ideas about what her most iconic role is (i think Fatal Attraction). This is not about what is necessarily their best performance, but their most iconic one. The one that they are most remembered for. For example Annie Hall might be Diane Keaton’s most iconic performance, but I don’t think I’d call it her best (personally). So le’ts start it off!
Jessica LangeOctober 27, 2013 at 12:11 pm #116348
Nathan LaneOctober 27, 2013 at 12:14 pm #116349
Debra WingerOctober 27, 2013 at 12:17 pm #116350
That’s a tricky one… For years her ultimate role was her award-winning turn in Tootsie (and also Frances, since they’re from the same year and she was praised for both). But AHS introduced her to a whole new generation and I believe that’s what finally put her in the A-list and made her worldwide known actres. So I’m going with American Horror Story.

Notes On A Scandal
Edward NortonOctober 27, 2013 at 12:32 pm #116352
It looks like Debra Winger was accidentally skipped so I’ll say Terms of Endearment
And for Edward Norton I’m gonna say Fight Club
Jimmy StewartOctober 27, 2013 at 12:38 pm #116353
I’d say Norton’s could also likely be American History X, given how it, like Fight Club, is rated highly on IMDB. Also, his performance is retroactively seen as a strong alternative to Roberto Benigni for Best Actor of 1998.
Jimmy Stewart – It’s A Wonderful Life (followed closely by Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Rear Window, and Vertigo)
Dustin HoffmanOctober 27, 2013 at 12:41 pm #116354
Anjelica HustonOctober 27, 2013 at 4:27 pm #116355
Anjelica Huston: My first gut instinct was to say the Grand High Witch in The Witches. But a split second later I realized it’s, without a doubt, Morticia Adams in The Adams Family (the orginal and the sequel).
I agree that Lange will be mostly remembered for American Horror Story. It’s really what made her a household name for multiple generations.
STEVE MARTINOctober 27, 2013 at 5:37 pm #116356
Sharon StoneOctober 27, 2013 at 5:44 pm #116357
Jack NicholsonOctober 27, 2013 at 5:46 pm #116358
Chinatown (though his best performance is The Last Detail). As for Close, perhaps Fatal Attraction is her most iconic, but part of being iconic is being remembered by multiple generations, and Cruella de Vil certainly is.
Marlon BrandoOctober 27, 2013 at 6:07 pm #116359
OMG..HE HAS 3 ICONIC ROLES
on the waterfront
i disagree on hoffman’s TOOTSIE
I say MIDNIGHT COWBOY
next up: Robert RedfordOctober 27, 2013 at 6:12 pm #116360
I’m going to say Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
