ReplyCopy URLOctober 4, 2021 at 8:24 pm #1204502589It looks formulaic, but…kinda fun. Certainly more exciting to me than West Side Story!

And a question~ obviously the songs are from the wonderful stage musical, but will we be getting any new numbers? And if so, who wrote them (as the brilliant Larson sadly passed many years ago).

Can original songs be previously unreleased songs? If so, I’m sure Larson had a deep bench, all musicals do.
But in any case — Lin Manuel Miranda could do it fairly easily especially since he’s played the main role. I don’t love him but he’s got a verrrrrry adept ear, almost chameleonic. Who knows, maybe he even got to do it with Sondheim. With the level of talent involved, I’m sure there’s an original song?

In order to qualify for a Best Original Song nomination, it has to be written specifically for the film itself. If it was originally written for an earlier project, then it won’t be eligible. Which was pretty much the reason why classic movie songs like ‘Mrs. Robinson’ from The Graduate and ‘Maybe This Time’ from Cabaret weren’t nominated in their respective years.

Ah. That’s what it seems like though right? That it’s unreleased Larson songs?
I don’t see why Miranda of all people wouldn’t write at least one song whilst directing a musical though…

The reviews are through the roof!!! I really hope it becomes a major Oscar player.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 12, 2021 at 4:38 pm #1204575047Those are some of the best and most unexpected reviews of the season so far. Bravo to all involved. I’d love for this flick to break through in every way it deserves. It’s an incredible movie.
ReplyCopy URLNovember 13, 2021 at 7:12 am #1204575846I actually got to see this in theaters last night, and this is easily the best musical film of the year so far, and one of the best films overall. I’ve never seen the show on stage, so I can’t judge its faithfulness, but it’s clear Lin-Manuel Miranda had great respect for the original show. He manages to not only respect its theatrical roots, but also make it feel like a legitimate film, and not a filmed stage production.
The cast was wonderful. Robin De Jesus, Alexandra Shipp, and Vanessa Hudgens were great; even Bradley Whitford was great in his small role as Stephen Sondheim. He nails Sondheim’s physical mannerisms and way of speaking brilliantly. Ultimately, this is 100% Andrew Garfield’s show, and he absolutely delivered. It’s not tricky to break the fourth wall to the audience and also interact with the other characters, but Garfield brilliantly pulled it off. He absolutely deserves an Oscar nomination for this!! One of his best performances of his entire career. The film editing and the sound should also get Oscar nominations, because how they are incorporated with the music is absolutely brilliant.
Also, the number of Broadway legends who make cameos in this movie is insane!!! I literally lost count of how many there were; there had to be at least 20 at the very minimum. Even if some of them only appear onscreen for about 30 seconds, you’ll easily recognize them.
We’ve seen many movies about what it’s like to get your big break in the film industry, so it was ultimately refreshing to see a movie about what it’s like to get your big break in the theater industry. I would consider this a a great companion piece to La La Land in terms of modern movie musicals.
