Doesn’t every school at the US play Into the Woods or West Side Story every single year? LOL. Even I, a random person in a random country, know who and how revered he is 😐.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s direction had a nice visual flair in spots, but was occasionally overwhelming. I wasn’t familiar with the musical and the story worked, despite not necessarily being groundbreaking or hitting many unexpected beats. The music is catchy enough to keep you invested in the story and the multiple timelines (or really just the back and forth between the show/Jonathan’s life and the workshop) weren’t too difficult to follow. Garfield really goes for it, and certainly gets his very showy moments, but he peppers it with some smaller, quieter moments that bring the performance back down the earth. I don’t know that I knew Garfield had this kind of vocal talent, but I was kind of blown away by his singing. His performance is the center of the film, but I have to mention that Robin De Jesus was a standout in the most substantial supporting role. He gets two big scenes, one loud and one quiet, in addition to being a funny and grounding presence throughout the rest of the film, and I thought he played it all really well. Overall, I thought this was a good film and a vehicle for a Garfield performance that I don’t think I really knew he had in him.

Especially in light of his death yesterday, this scene of Andrew Garfield as Larson listening to a voice message Sondheim (re)recorded himself at LMM’s request for Tick, Tick….Boom! has to be one of the most moving ones in any movie released this (or any) year.

You mean playing the person to the best of his abilities? Since this is based on a real person.

January 29, 2022 at 9:52 am #1204758276Finally watched. Didn’t realize that Andrew Garfield could do ALL OF THAT! Pretty miraculous performance as Jonathan Larson. LMM threw everything but the kitchen sink here directing wise, which undercut Garfield in stretches and made the film much more manic than it needed to be. Music was moving throughout. The Broadway cameos gave me my life (only legends allowed, bitches!), and that finale left me completely wrecked. Also, Robin de Jesus should have absolutely been in the supporting actor conversation this cycle, especially considering who we’re just handing Oscar nominations to on a silver platter.
