Hi, I would also like to add: I’d had never seen Alison Oliver or Archie Madekwe’s previous work but boy did they deliver in this. They both had fantastic moments especially Alison who has a monologue. The movie fully showcases Keoghans insane commitment as an actor. He will shock you. And Carey has a fun cameo, her scenes are with the whole ensemble! The cinematography and visuals are so good you can eat it. Oh and it takes place in the early 2000s.
Hi, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I understand you may be restricted about how much you can say right now, but I had a few questions about the film and your impressions, if you are able to share more.
-It’s been tagged as a thriller in official announcements so far, although reading the reactions it sounds like there are at least a few comic moments too. Would you say it still felt like a thriller to you, just with some comic elements too, or is it more of a dark comedy? Or even a drama rather than a thriller as such?
-I know some filming was done at Oxford University and one of the Twitter reactions mentions an early sequence with Keoghan’s character and other friends there. Does a substantial amount of the film take place at Oxford, or is it mainly early scenes before the action moves elsewhere?
-Can you share more details about Elordi’s performance in general? I was curious about how well he fits in with the rest of the ensemble, and also how he does with an English accent (he mentioned that he is playing a British aristocrat so I assume he does an accent to match).
-If it’s not too much of a spoiler, can you give us a hint of the dynamic between Keoghan and Elordi’s characters (such as friendly/hostile/romantic/etc)?
-I know soundtracks aren’t always finalised in a test screening version, so it may be too early to know this for certain, but what were your thoughts on the music? Did it seem like there was a lot of original score and/or any existing classical music that was used? Also with the early 2000s setting, I wondered if Emerald used any songs from that era.
-Do you think it will be in contention for any awards when the time comes, and if so which categories would be most likely?
Thanks so much for any further details you are free to share!

potential spoilers//
-It’s a Thriller/Drama above all. The supporting cast brings the humor. The comedy is mostly dark and twisted when it’s coming from an individual character but the scenes where they’re all together are objectively funny
-significant amount takes place at uni. The movie starts as the school year is beginning and during the summertime is when the setting moves to Saltburn and that’s where we’re introduced to the parents/other characters of the film. It definitely takes place at Saltburn longer than it does at Oxford tho-I was afraid he was gonna stand out like a sore thumb but Elordi fit right in. I can’t tell whether an English accent is good or not sorry 😭 he wasn’t my personal standout, his character description is basically Nate Jacobs but the camera focuses on him so much (bcs it’s through Keoghans perspective) you’re almost forced to like him.
-yes to all the above tbh. It’s a friendship but there’s LAYERS to it.
-They said some of the music was just in there as placeholders so i wasn’t too focused but I do remember the moonlight’s “the middle of the world” played. And yesss omg they used music from that era during party scenes/family gatherings . Those were the fun bits of the movie
-I really hope so. Especially for Barry’s performance. I don’t know how audiences will embrace this because there’s a lot of nudity and explicit scenes that will get them talking for sure!!! I hope these scenes don’t undermine other aspects of the film. In my opinion this movie is drastically better than PYW so if that got noms for best picture, best editing, best screenplay, it would be a shame if this didn’t. However Emerald is 2/2 for controversial endings. Not everyone will be happy I fear. I can’t decide how I felt about it yet.

she said emerald initially offered her a small role so she asked for a bigger part which is insane to me because she’s STILL barely in it. Cant believe we almost had her for 2 seconds instead of 2 full minutes

Thank you so much! This all sounds really interesting, can’t wait to see the film. Really appreciate you sharing all this with us and answering all my questions, thanks again!
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 8, 2023 at 9:46 am #1205297260A few more details I’ve found online:
A cast and crew group photo posted by the film’s make-up artist: https://www.instagram.com/p/CkYgR8cq8ym/?hl=en-gb This also confirms that Drayton House (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drayton_House) in England was used as one of the locations. Going by the number of cast members there, I am guessing this was the location for the main family home in the film.
There are also a few more images on her Instagram from the film’s shoot, mostly of her on her own in the make-up trailer though, so it doesn’t really give anything away. Her account is here: https://www.instagram.com/natfox_makeupartist/ According to this post (https://www.instagram.com/p/CinqKy0Ke9Z/?hl=en-gb), filming finished on 17th September.
A photo from an Oxford-based Instagram observing filming there last summer, it doesn’t show that much but does hint at something, as does the caption, so possible light spoiler ahead: https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch8Hz6VrVPI/?hl=en-gb
I also searched Reddit and found a thread with screenshots of messages from someone who attended a screening. There are a few spoilers here about events and characters in the first section of the film: https://www.reddit.com/r/ewanmitchell/comments/10w85d1/spoiler_more_info_on_ewans_character_in_saltburn/
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 8, 2023 at 11:43 am #1205297385i can’t find your other reply or maybe u deleted it but
-Saltburn is the town jacobs wealthy family lives in. Jacobs name: Felix, Barry’s: Oliver, Carey’s: Pamela. Can’t remember Rosamund’s name but she plays Jacobs and Alison Oliver’s mother. Richard Grant is her husband.
-The film opens with Oliver narrating the story to someone-and yes Felix is the subject of Oliver’s obsession. I’m very interested to see how they will market this movie

Thanjs so much for this information. If you don’t mind one more question, I know that you’ve said she’s only in it for two minutes but what is Mulligan’s/Pamela’s role? Is she again playing Rosamund Pike’s sister, or a member of her family? Thanks again, and I completely understand if you don’t want to say more.

Hi, thanks for your reply! Yes unfortunately I deleted it by mistake, I meant to hit the Edit button to add something and landed on Delete instead. Thank you for remembering my post even after it had gone! And thanks for giving more details and information. I had also been wondering about who Alison and Richard were playing in the family so thanks for confirming that too.
Do you remember if Oliver’s narration recurs throughout the film, or is it just used at the beginning? Also, are you allowed to comment one way or the other about whether the friendship between Felix and Oliver has any kind of sexual dimension (which I wondered due to Fennell asking Elordi to read Brideshead Revisited), or would that be more information than you are able to share from the screening? I completely understand if this would be more plot than you were allowed to discuss.
Thanks again!

She’s Rosamund’s friend. Rosamund has been letting her live with them temporarily

the narration is throughout. Knowing more abt Jacob and Barry might give it away, especially since I don’t know what angle they’re gonna pitch this movie from. I don’t mind saying if u want to know but just as a warning

Hi, thanks again. If it’s OK for you to share, then I would be interested to know, I don’t mind spoilers at all. I understand though if others don’t want major spoilers on the thread, so if that’s a concern then you could send me a PM instead, I’m fine either way. Thank you!

ReplyCopy URLFebruary 9, 2023 at 3:22 am #1205297888This movie sounds like a mix of Maurice and The Talented Mr. Ripley. And I think that’s the most genius movie idea I’ve heard in a long time. I would have preferred if it had been set much earlier than 2000 though but its fine by me. I’m so excited!
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 9, 2023 at 6:11 am #1205297952There’s no romance in the movie but Barry’s character does fruity stuff
