The people who kept calling it the new Spencer are now tárrified (sorry I had to).

I never understood why they called it the new Spencer, it’s doing miles better in every possible way.

For a BP frontrunner The Fabelmans shutout is surprising. TPOTD won 4 here if I remember correctly.

The Fablemans just doesn’t feel like a critics movie outside of maybe Williams. It’s definitely not off-beat or cutting edge enough for New York.

Worth remembering they also gave BP to Carol (they’re clearly Blanchett fans). I could see Tar having a similar trajectory, 4-6 noms but missing picture and director

Because it’s an arthouse movie about a difficult woman.

I loved Spencer but it was just plain weird. TAR is very straightforward and there’s nothing strange about it.

I think the Carol wins here are more related to how much they seem to like Todd Haynes than Blanchett. Haynes, Moore and Safe were runner-ups in 1995 and Far From Heaven won basically everything it was eligible for, just losing Actress and being snubbed of a mention for Screenplay.
