Only three directors have won the Academy Award for Best Director on three or more occasions (John Ford, with 4 wins, and Frank Capra and William Wyler, with 3 each).

Of the living directors who have won 2 Oscars for Best Director, who do you think is most likely to win a 3rd time?

Cuaron and Iñárritu seems the most obvious due to their crazy popularity and respect among their peers besides the whole Three Amigos thing. Iñarritu won back to back! The next oscar bait movie from them could get.
Maybe if they let people know they’re close to a rare 3-win and build narrative for it.
Or even better: they direct together. It would be irresistible to deny a win.

Ang Lee maybe in a decade or so. He’s also very respected and needs a big movie in the Oscar circuit but he seems like a plausible choice to happen organically. I would love him to win the 3rd.

Spilberg is doing too formulaic in his movies lately. He needs to step up and make a true masterpiece to win. He feels over awarded by his hype alone (just like Meryl) besides having ‘only’ 2.

I see Damien Chazelle getting there eventually. Good sis damy is in a breakthrough mode and did 2 masterpieces in a row and a really good one where he did the best he could with the material. He’s fresh and full with ideas. He’s a good name for his generation and I don’t see why he couldn’t manage in 15 years or so.

Chromatica and Fetch the Bolt Cutters AOTYs yeah

Spielberg can obviously win that 3rd Directing Oscar. His stature in the Academy, and the respect Hollywood has for him is at an all-time high. He might very well be the next president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, after John Bailey.

All needs is the right project to come along.  His refusal to do prestige films counts against him, but with the right film project, it will happen.

Lol, what? He made Lincoln, The Post and Bridge of Spies this decade alone.

Steven Spielberg or Alejandro G. Iñárritu I think. Both equally deserved though since they are always dependable.

Cuarón still hasn’t won Best Picture so him. He still needs to win the BP + BD combo
