Jake hasn’t been nominated since Brokeback. Sure seems like he is overdue. I thought End of Watch was his best since Brokeback. I was night a big fan of Nightcrawler but many sure thought he deserved a nomination for his performance. Why no love for Jake ????

January 23, 2018 at 6:29 pm #1202476863It’s interesting that Denzel got in for Roman J. Israel, Esq., a Dan Gilroy film and Jake missed for Nightcrawler, also a Dan Gilroy film. Nightcrawler was a much better movie (Oscar-nominated script) and had much more box office.
Jake was excellent in Stronger. It seemed like exactly the kind of movie the Academy would go for. I agree with you Thomas, he’s long overdue.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 24, 2018 at 12:31 am #1202477034I think they definitely have something against him because they have been snubbing him for years. But that snub for Nightcrawler was really painful. He was so raw, intense and scary as Bloom. Damn.

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 24, 2018 at 1:08 am #1202477047I don’t think he quite deserved it for Stronger, but he’s been snubbed a few times. He should have been nominated for Nightcrawler. I forgot about End of Watch, he would have been a good nominee for that too. Hopefully he gets an Oscar soon. I think it’ll happen with the right role.

That’s really all I can think of because his resume speaks for itself. We’re not even talking about winning an Oscar here, just getting a freaking nomination lol

January 24, 2018 at 5:34 am #1202477130He should have been nominated for a number of roles, most importantly Nightcrawler which was no lesser performance than De Niro in Taxi Driver.
I choose to believe the increasingly young and diverse Academy won’t overlook young(ish) male talent like J-Gyl and Joseph Gordon-Levitt much longer – the nods for Chalamet and Kaluuya are already an indication of things shifting in the right direction.

In a perfect world for Jake, he would have six Oscar nominations and one Oscar win right now.
He would’ve won for Brokeback Mountain, and received nominations for Love and Other Drugs, End of Watch, Nightcrawler, Nocturnal Animals, and Stronger.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 24, 2018 at 7:52 am #1202477224I also saw Jake on stage in NYC in Sunday in the Park. He was amazing. Jake has such a stage presence. Maybe more than a screen presence. My bet is that he had took his career in the stage direction he would be a multiple Tony winner by now. Yes he can sing !! So talented.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 24, 2018 at 8:19 am #1202477247Looking through his filmography it does look like he has the right amount of bait performances. I personally don’t think Nightcrawler was that great, but his work in Zodiac, Brothers, Prisoners, Southpaw and Nocturnal Animals all looks like great work. He may just be Chastained for the time being.

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 24, 2018 at 10:11 am #1202477342He should’ve nominated for Nightcrawler and it’s his only real big snub because he was right there in the middle of it all along. And the movie was also in play elsewhere.
For Stronger he was out the moment the Globes and SAG didn’t nominate him back to back in the same week. All this while the movie was failing too. He was pushed out of the race and forgotten. It can’t be surprising that this happened. And the same could be said about his other roles.
And Denzel will tell you he doesn’t need a BP contender to get nominated. Wasn’t his film an even bigger flop than Stronger?

ReplyCopy URLJanuary 24, 2018 at 10:30 am #1202477349Sometimes being in a Best Picture contender doesn’t even help. For example, Amy Adams in Arrival and Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips.
I am looking forward to Wildlife. Paul Dano is another that I think should get more recognition than he does.
