Going by reputation, Ingrid Bergman in For Whom the Bell Tolls over Casablanca, and Dennis Hopper in Hoosiers over Blue Velvet do not represent modern consensus, although I haven’t seen either nominated performance so I’d be interested to hear from someone who has.

I’ve heard that For Whom the Bell Tolls is very bad.

Bette Midler should have won the Comedy Actress Globe for Hocus Pocus instead of winning in the TV movie category for Gypsy.

I’m not sure how anyone can defend any aspect of Bombshell, so how does Robbie not, by default, apply here for Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood?

Echo Huppert for Things to Come, even if Elle is still a performance for the ages.

Anyway, there’s a million cases of this, especially in the technical categories where it is common for artists to complete multiple projects in a year (costuming, scoring, etc.). You could fill entire pages of a thread with missed opportunities in the producing categories alone.

Michelle Pfeiffer nominated for Love Field should have been for Batman Returns.

I knew her nomination for Dangerous Liaisons was in supporting but Michelle Pfeiffer should have been nominated for Married to the Mob in Lead instead.

FYC OSCARS : VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", AMANDA SEYFRIED FOR "MANK", CHADWICK BOSEMAN FOR "MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM", PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY).

That 1988 BA was stacked af. She was so good in it but I don’t know if she would have made my Top 5.

Marion Cotillard – I prefer her role in The Immigrant over Two Days, One Night
Patricia Clarkson – The Station Agent over Pieces of April
Kate Nelligan – Frankie and Johnny over The Prince of Tides

She was campaigned lead for the former, and was nominated there at SAG.

Because she shouldn’t have been nominated for either?

The same is true of about 99% of the performances mentioned here, but I thought we were all just playing along with the premise.

Just wondering, what are your favorite performances of her?

At this point, it may be a cliché to mention La Cérémonie and The Piano Teacher, but they’re incredible. Same goes for Things to Come. Among her lesser-known performances, my favorites are Every Man for Himself, Deep Water, Passion, Entre Nous, Malina, In Another Country, Valley of Love, Mrs. Hyde, and basically any collaboration with Chabrol.
