We all know there are keys to winning an Oscar – play gay, die a tragic death, play a real-life person etc.
But this talk of Meryl Streep in Florence has gotten me thinking – there have been some actors who have actually gained weight or lost significant amounts of weight to play a certain character. Some of them have been nominated and won (Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto both shed tons of weight and were victorious on Oscar night) – so what are some other examples of actors physically changing their appearance and getting nominated or winning? Also, who are some that fully committed to altering their appearance but were ultimately snubbed?October 22, 2014 at 12:49 pm #164178
Christian Bale, The Fighter and Anne Hathaway, Les MiserablesOctober 22, 2014 at 12:53 pm #164179
Leto’s Oscar-winning performance was at least the second time he’d altered himself for a character. He packed on many pounds to play Mark David Chapman in “Chapter 27,” which nabbed him a Best Actor award at the Zurich Festival but nothing else other than a serious case of gout after the eventual weight loss.October 22, 2014 at 12:56 pm #164180
^^ yeah I was thinking of Leto – didn’t he also lose tons of weight for Requiem for a Dream to play a junkie more convincingly?October 22, 2014 at 1:09 pm #164181
Charliza Theron – Monster (gained a ton of weight)
Natalie Portman – Black Swan (lost weight)
Marion Cotillard – La Vie en Rose (Lost weight, shaved hairline and eyebrows)
Jennifer Hudson – Dreamgirls (Idk if these really counts but reportedly she did gain a decen amount of weight for the movie)
Nicole Kidman – The Hourse (fake nose)
Tom Hanks – Phildadelphia (I believe he had to lose a decent amount of weight for this but I could be wrong)
Robert DeNiro – Raging Bull (Reportedly lost weight and gained muscle for the young scenes, then gained like 40 pounds for the old ones)
And honestly probably a ton moreOctober 22, 2014 at 1:13 pm #164182
On screen or off screen?? LOL The Renee Zellweger funny business is quite funny…and all over the news. Yes, everyone in Hollywood looks good because they feel good. That has to be it. They stay out of the sun, take care of themselves, and use facial lotion from Academy give-aways. They don’t actually physically alter their bodies through surgery. Gasp!October 22, 2014 at 1:20 pm #164183
Some other examples from people already mentioned:
Christian Bale, American Hustle
Jared Leto (Chapter 27) –> gained enormous amount of weight
Christian Bale (The Machinist) –> lost a ton of weightOctober 22, 2014 at 1:35 pm #164184
On the ‘snubbed’ side, Michael Fassbender, after losing weight for Hunger, and delivering the performance he did, absolutely deserved a nomination.
Can we count Jonah Hill losing weight and getting nominated for Moneyball; then gaining it all back for Wolf of Wall Street and getting nominated again?

Russell Crowe, “The Insider”
Tom Hanks, “Cast Away”
Will Smith, “Ali”
Renee Zellweger, “Bridget Jones’ Diary”October 22, 2014 at 4:15 pm #164186
George Clooney gained quite a bit of weight for his role in Syriana (nominated & won Oscar for Best Supporting Actor 2005).October 22, 2014 at 11:05 pm #164187
It’s been mentioned but it deserves rementioning: Robert DeNiro in Raging Bull. Probably the most extreme example (and the best performance).
