A film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running hit musical, Cats, is being brought to the big screen courtesy of Universal Pictures and Working Title Films. Academy Award winner Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) is set to direct, marking this as his second movie musical after having previously helmed 2012’s Les Misérables.
It was just announced that Oscar & Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson will be taking on the iconic role of Grizabella.

I…umm…hmmm. Ok. I don’t know that anyone wanted or needed this. J Hud will do a lovely rendition of “Memory”, but this just confuses me. And Tom Hooper is likely to water down whatever charm this could potentially have.

Taylor Swift, James Corden, and Ian McKellen will also apparently be joining the cast, although their roles haven’t been specified yet.
I’m not sure how I feel about Taylor Swift joining the cast. I remember she was almost set to play Eponine in the Les Misérables film, and many people were going to boycott it because of that. Thankfully, Samantha Barks got the role, and all was right with the world.July 20, 2018 at 8:03 am #1202590865
Taylor Swift? Ok. Sure.
No.July 20, 2018 at 8:15 am #1202590866
What I wonder is how are they going to do these performances? Is it going to be motion capture? Or will they just do the same type of costumes seen on stage?July 20, 2018 at 8:17 am #1202590870
It will be a cringefest.July 20, 2018 at 8:42 am #1202590881

The former is something I’ve wanted to see more of after being impressed with Steven Spielberg’s work on The Adventures of Tintin.July 20, 2018 at 9:33 am #1202590917

Hooper and Swift seem to have a good relationship, considering he nearly cast her in Les Mis (Redmayne did a screen test with her and was very complimentary of her work) and he recently attended her current tour. And let’s not act like a film adaptation of a musical as successful as Cats couldn’t have gotten funding without casting a pop star.
Featuring in a musical about cats is probably the most on-brand thing that Swift has ever done. She (and her pets) will probably be all over the promo campaign for this, lmao.
I know they haven’t announced her role yet, but I’ve seen some speculation that she could be in for Victoria… which is the same part Andrew Lloyd Webber said he wrote a new song for. I guess he’ll use her to try to win his second Oscar the way he used Madonna to win his first.July 20, 2018 at 12:13 pm #1202590989
Apparently they originally asked Rihanna to play Bombalurina but she turned it down and they gave it to Taylor Swift.
That is the truth.
