Apparently they originally asked Rihanna to play Bombalurina but she turned it down and they gave it to Taylor Swift.

Ah that explains it. I was confused on who she would play.

Ok so this sounds like something that would have made a lot of money at some point. But not today. I don’t see this being super popular.

Mr. Mistoffelees could be a role of a lifetime though if given to the right actor. Neil Patrick Harris or Derek Hough maybe?

<p style=”text-align: left;”>This is a mess and this comes as a massive Taylor Swift fan AND a massive Broadway fan. Universal should be focused on bringing Wicked to theatres with Lea Michele instead of this trainwreck. There are certain musicals that should stay on the stage and Cats is one of them. As for Taylor, she’s an average actress who would do well to stay out of a major role. Write music for the soundtrack and win your oscar that way</p>

J HUD should not be cast in this role. It should go to an older actress. That’s what the song is about and what the character is. J HUD would be perfect for a few other roles in the show.

Jennifer Hudson is actually around the same age Betty Buckley was when she first played Grizabella in the Broadway production.

Why should it go to an older actress? Elaine Paige, who originated the role, was 33 when it debuted so Hudson is fine

This. I also seriously don’t understand how they think the concept and story (or lack of really) of the musical will appeal to a large audience, and it’s not like this is going to have a small budget.

Hooper’s dutch angles will look even more ridiculous here than in Les Mis.

I have a feeling Nicole Scherzinger would have played Grizabella had she not fallen out with Andrew Lloyd Webber.

One thing I’d like to point out is that there have been a few instances where filmmakers with one successful musical under their belt end up doing another one, yet the follow-up doesn’t end up being as successful. In 1973, Norman Jewison followed-up Fiddler on the Roof with Jesus Christ Superstar. While the latter film was a commercial success given its $3,500,000 budget, it still wasn’t as well received critically. In 2009, Rob Marshall followed-up Chicago with Nine, which turned out to be a big disappointment all around. In 2012, Adam Shankman followed-up Hairspray with Rock of Ages, which flopped at the box office.

Could Tom Hooper end up following a similar outcome? Or could he pull a Robert Wise and prove to be successful with movie musicals?

Nicole ended up on that recent ALW album so I think they might have reconciled. I wish she had been cast instead of J HUD.

Perhaps that is true. It’s a shame she’s getting past on this then, she received great reviews from the London production
